Dan Snyder Loses Mind, Details at 11

As hinted elsewhere in the board, it's now official... Redskins owner Daniel Snyder's "Red Zebra Broadcasting" is buying Mega's DC rimshots, WBPS/94.3 Warrenton VA, WBZS/92.7 Prince Frederick MD, and WKDL/730 Alexandria.

It's pretty bad when the AM has the best signal, at least when the sun's up.

The stations will officially be the home of Your Washington Redskins starting with the 2006 season...at least the FMs at any rate, as it's not clear if 730 will come along for the ride in English, and there are rumors that WTEM/980 would sell airtime for games. It's widely believed that the former Mega stations (FM, at least) will change to English-language sports talk, presumably with lots of Redskins content.

Snyder recently hired now-former Clear Channel executive Bennett Zier, who's apparently bringing along a number of his former staff members.

Based on Radio-Locator.com's coverage area maps, WKDL-730 has a decent daytime signal, which will help for Redskins' games with 1:05 P.M. starts.

But for night games as well as 4:15 P.M. starts after the end of September, WKDL's signal isn't anything to write home about.

Wait 'til the 'Skins play at night, and then hear the complaints roll in.

This scheme might actually have worked had Dan Snyder been able to purchase a station with a stronger nighttime signal inside (and just outside of) the Beltway than that of WKDL.

Maybe Snyder's best hope is that the new Bonneville/Washington Post joint venture for 1500/107.7 doesn't last long and that he would be able to buy those two stations. At least then, he'd not only have a great signal, but he could build a sports radio powerhouse around not only the 'Skins, but the Nationals (whose radio rights could be part of such a purchase), and maybe even the Capitals and Wizards as well.

Don't worry about hearing football on the radio in DC. WBAL and WIYY will provide a more than adequate signal for the Ravens.

Even if the deal goes through with WTEM, I'd still say Snyder lost his mind, or has been sold a bill of goods without any real knowledge of signals.

I can't imagine that this will do anything but decrease the audience for the Redskins games. The St. Louis deal (KTRS instead of KMOX) is a little better, but this trend is a disturbing one, since it seems to put ego, vanity, and control ahead of making the broadcasts easily available to the public. But then, who cares about the public?
