Dan "The Hit Man" Kelly passes

Last week in the Tulsa World obits a 2 line mention of David Michael Shelton of Muskogee, aka Dan "the hitman" Kelly, 60, passing. I worked with Kelly at 106.1 when it was KLITE (what a cluster F^%$& that place was...just ask Gary Reynolds), and again when I hired him at KRAV. Great guy. He will be missed.

Dan invited me to see a radio station while I was in high school. It was the first time I got to see inside. The K-107 studio was really cool, not to mention legendary. Lots of great talent and Dan gave me an open door invite to come up any time I wanted. When I was an intern for KRAV he was hosting the 70s Saturday Night and would have me call in songs from the production room that he wanted to play. (Mike McCarthy called me into the office about that.) My favorite memory of Dan was when I was working with him at KOOL 106.1. Johnny Dark was on the air at the time and was running late so he asked Dan to hold things down until he got there. Dan changed his voice to sound like Johnny and made up some great stories about smoking weed with John Lennon. I was with PD Joe Riddle at the time and we were in tears we were laughing so hard! Joe mentioned to me that night about how funny it was but was a bit sad he'd have to call Dan into his office the next day. There are several other memories that pop into mind when it comes to Dan. I'll have to share more stories another day.

Dan gave me my first taste of radio. He made it seem bigger than life. He will be missed.

I remember meeting him at Big Splash when he was at KAY-107. He was the one operating the video camera that was recording all of the people performing in a lip sync contest. I also remember he was about the only one of the staff who was willing to socialize with us kids! That was the only time I met him in person, but he seemed like a good guy.

I know Dan "The Hitman" Kelly as Michael Shelton.

I met him when I was 24 yrs. old. He work at WCGQ 107.3 & later for Kissin 100.1 in Columbus, ga. He was MC for a swimsuit contest I was in. I thought he was the most handsome man I had ever met. We dated for (5) years. I loved Michael with all of my heart. He later went to Montgomery then back here to Columbus. He then landed a job back in Tulsa. I knew he had to go so I did not want to hold him back. We both cried the day he left.

He loved Radio so much. His personality was always humorous and uplifting. His smile would enter a room before he did and his laughter was contagious.

Michael would send a ticket for me to fly to Tulsa and he would fly back to Columbus every 3 months to visit me. His nickname for me was 'Munchkin"!

I understand he has a son now, I spoke with Michael a few years ago and I could tell as he spoke of his son that his face was beaming with pride. i wish I could meet his son and tell him what a wonderful man Michael was.

Michael was a very deeply spiritual person as well, I know this because I knew him.

I am so sad to hear he passed, but I know He is in heaven

This is Zachariah David Shelton. I am Michael Shelton's son. I find it amazing how I was just messing around on the computer at school and I saw these comments. I started to tear up in the middle of class. My dad was the greatest person I have ever met and it is so cool to see how awesome of a guy he was. I am proud to be his son. I just want to say thank you. Seeing the comments about him helped me a lot.

Zach, So sorry nobody has responded yet. In case you haven't noticed, this board gets checked only weekly or less by most that post.

I know it's been a couple of years now, but still ---- I'm so sorry about your dad. I knew him from trying to get radio jobs in Tulsa back in the late 70's and early 80's. He was a great guy and from friends that knew him better than I, they all, without a skip, say he was one the real good guys in the business. No question about it.

You should be VERY proud to be his son.
