WPRO talk-show host Dan Yorke and John DePetro, a former Rhode Island talk-radio host, got into an on-air spat yesterday after DePetro showed up uninvited at a show Yorke was hosting in West Warwick, wrested a live microphone from Yorke and made derogatory comments that were broadcast on air.
The tussle started after Yorke made comments criticizing Cranston Mayor Stephen P. Laffey for having DePetro as master of ceremonies for Laffey's Thursday announcement that he will challenge U.S. Sen. Lincoln D. Chafee in the Republican primary next year.
DePetro, who now hosts a radio talk show in Boston, apparently heard the comments and charged over to the Cardi's Furniture store on Quaker Lane in West Warwick, where Yorke was broadcasting live from an event designed to raise donations of items and money for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
At one point, DePetro asserted on the air that WPRO had offered him Yorke's afternoon radio slot. The two exchanged words, then DePetro left, according to the West Warwick police.
After the on-air exchange, David Bernstein, director of operations and news at WPRO, went on the show to denounce DePetro and say that Yorke's contract had recently been renewed.
"This was a DePetro out-of-his-mind experience . . . stupid DePetro stuff," said Bernstein in an interview last night. "DePetro was never offered the job."
Bernstein said he went on the air to assure "Dan's listeners that Dan's job was never offered to DePetro and . . . that Dan is the afternoon host and when Dan's contract was up for renewal, we renewed it."
DePetro is a longtime friend and supporter of Laffey and was master of ceremonies for his announcement on Thursday, but DePetro has no formal role in Laffey's campaign, said the mayor's spokeswoman yesterday.
Bernstein said he was upset that DePetro's theatrics had disrupted the event to help hurricane victims.
Yorke declined comment when reached last night. DePetro did not return a telephone inquiry seeking comment.
