Dana Hess out at Y92!!!!!

Dana Hess was fired on Friday by Cheap Channel after over a decade with the station. He is a great guy, and the latest to fall under the Cheap axe. I expect the morning show to go the same route, as Whoopi Goldberg has already replaced a dozen or shows on CC AC's across the country. The only thing is that Paul Robbins still under contract, and a fat one at that! Any opinions on this one? And Dana, if you're reading this, you got robbed. My best to you buddy. :(

Dana is a class act and a consumate professional. I had the privledge of working with him for a number of years back in the day. Dana had been with the station a little over 18 years and was there in afternoon drive when KEAR became KGBY (Y92) in February of 1991.

Dana, good luck to you! Hopefully you'll land a great gig soon...One that you more than deserve.

If I remember correctly Dana started at Y92 back when it was a Group W station. Met him once back on 2002 and he was a very nice guy. It's really so typical though. If you're making decent bucks and have been at a station for quite a while it would seem that you're a target at Clear Channel. Look what they did in New York and all of the other cities that have made headlines over the last several months. You're only safe if you make small money. Then again, those low-paid board-ops might have something to add as I hear that CC is firing them as well and making one person run several stations at once during the overnight hours...

As for Dana, great human and I wish him all the best. If I programmed Mix-96 I'd hire him fast...

This is horible. Clear Channel is horible. Dana is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet! Sacramento radio, and radio in general is going down hill. I hope that Dana will find something even better. Dana, I just listened to you the other day and you sounded great.
Michael Rivers...good to see your name again! Remember, when you're feeling low, sing "Row, row, row your boat..gently down the stream!" It helps.
Best of luck to you Dana!

ALL ACCESS has learned that CLEAR CHANNEL Hot AC KYSR (STAR 98.7)/LOS ANGELES has let longtime morning diva JAMIE WHITE and her co-host/producers JACK & STENCH go. Look for a change in direction in the STAR 98.7 morning show.

as I was saying...

Dana Hess surely would not remember me, but I worked with him in 1992. Class and talent is what I remember...Typical CheapChannel move. Soooo glad I don't work for them anymore...Best of luck to Dana.

It pays to work for a smaller company. After leaving Salem Sacramento, I returned to Bakersfield and joined American General Media. The management is supportive of their people, with many of the staff members going on five years or more of working for AGM. The company aggressively markets its properties year-round (not just during the Spring and Fall survey periods) using big media campaigns and by having two full-time Promotions Directors with several part-time helpers (not interns). It is the most community-minded broadcaster in the market. Plus it makes money, too - imagine that! What a refreshing change...

Yeah, but it's Bakersfield! Most people look to go to a bigger market rather than a smaller one. A little hint, Large markets have the small number, Small markets have the bigger number. 78? That's small.

Good to see you still around Chris, and welcome back to Bakersfield.

I thought AGM was all run on automation now...

Nice to see there are still a few breathing (and NOW at least 2 talented) souls in the building.

The whole point of this conversation to begin with was that Dana was a dedicated employee for almost 20 friggin years and he got the Corrurpt Channel axe, and now his options for a new gig are obviously limited here. So your big market ideals are cr*p when considering where you work. Isn't it better to make good money in a small market where you're happy, your job is stable, and where you like going to work, then at a big company like Crotch Channel where you get booted on a consultants whim without a moments notice. At least Chris Squires is happy where he is now, even if it's in a smaller market. Market size means little, other than the fact that your chance of bouncing back quickly is very limited. Poor Dana is going to have a hard time finding a new station here in Suckatomato, as his options are very few, and the openings available even fewer. We should all be as lucky as Chris to find a place that appreciates his abilities and makes him feel welcome. Can you say that about the station you're working for now?

Why, YES!!!
I had that bitterness you have inside you right now until I found something bigger and better. You are what you make of yourself and it appears maybe some of whatever makes this Squires guy happy should rub off on you.

Hey Shooty!

Say what you want about how small the Bakersfield market is ranking-wise ... at least it doesn't sound small market! (We can thank Buck Owens' company for that.) Unfortunately, Sacramento does. And I remember when Sac was an excellent-plus market and one to look up to with great stations (KROY, KROI, KNDE) and talented broadcasters (Wonder Rabbitt, Bob West, Rick Gillette) who left a terrific heritage. What happened?

By the way, I'm not afraid to use my real name ... how 'bout you?

And Sac proves it's small market once again with the fall out from The End. Better get back in the studio Shooty, or you'll lose your hard earned board op job!

I had actually googled this board regarding "The End" and saw the posting on Dana. I have been an avid listener for years and am so sorry to hear he's no longer at Y92. I also googled Lyman James (the replacement), only to find he's out of Kansas! It's no wonder, the lines are always busy at that station. Is anyone live besides the 3 hour morning show with Paul? How sad for radio. I've removed all Clearchannel stations from my radio. And, Dana if your reading this, you're missed. Hopefully, I'll hear your voice on another station soon. One with a more reputable company.

A devoted fan!

Wow, thanks for all the kind words! And thanks to Michael Rivers for tipping me off about this site. In the past few weeks I've heard from a lot of friends and former co-workers going back several years. I really do appreciate all the nice things that have been said, and I wish I could thank each of you personally. I have to admit, 18 years is truly a remarkable run, and I've enjoyed the countless opportunities to connect with Sacramento listeners. I wonder if I'll ever be that lucky again.

I also want to express my sympathy (or empathy) to Doug Thomas at Smooth Jazz, Jeff Jensen and the rest of the Flash staff. It's been a bloody month (BTW, when is our first support group meeting?). And I know there are some strong opinions out there concerning the Morning Rave, but I feel for them, too. There was enough stupidity to go around. No one thinks someone is going to die as a result of a radio contest... and they're going to have to live with the consequences the rest of their lives.

Well, thanks again. Now it's back to the job search. If anyone would like to check-in, my e-mail address is [email protected]

Dana

Wow. They were right. You are a class act, Dana! Wish I had the opportunity to have worked with you. Best of luck to you! I'll keep my ears open for ya.

It was those amigos from san antonio that fired the entire staff at cool 101 back in 1999. There was this rumor that they were going to change the format at cool to jamin' oldies....yea no problem with that....staff meeting was announced for ALL fultimers....meeting was out of the building we were over at the red lion inn???....yea right were gonna change the format and we DONT NEED ANYONE OF YOU!!!!! they fired the entire fulltime staff in less that 5 minutes, had all our paperwork under their arms and passed it out as we lined up to leave......we were all SHOCKED.......make an appointment to use the studio for airchecks, and to come get your personal belongings out of your lockers......we had a GREAT time in the bar of that hotel....I remember I was hammered when I left......we all had to make one of these phone calls, "honey you won't believe what happened to me this afternoon, they fired me and the WHOLE staff....Im at the red lion inn and I need a ride"...........come and get me....never been at a mass firing before, hope it never happens again to ANYONE, its a sad day when things like that happen...Thats what i remember to the best of my knowledge, if you were there....add your comments.....I'de love to read them.....Bob Galli "The Godfather" Buffalo, NY

They hired a promotion director to become PD at Y92--this should tell you something very significant. Sure she is coming "home" to Sack of Tomatoes but has she ever programmed a radio station?
