It really depends on how it is presented. I am a believer than the Rhythmic format should be a mix of Hip Hop and R&B (primarily) but also have MAINSTREAM dance and rhythm-based Pop records (hollaback girl, etc.). I remember 5 years ago when KYLD in SF would play quite a bit of mainstream dance music (before having any dance competitors) and they sounded AMAZING! I'd say in 98-2001 KYLD was un-stoppable and they had a decent share of mainstream dance (alice deejay, gigi d'agostino, daft punk, etc.).

I just think it all depends on how it is presented. 50/50 on dance and hip hop, I don't think so. You're talking about two different cultures of music. Something VERY similar was tried in Sac back in 2000-2001 on 105.5 called "Power 105.5" - everyone said they were dance, but they were really a fairly even balance of Dance and Hip Hop.

Maybe Dance and "upbeat" urban hits would work together. But people don't realize its all about having a good time with upbeat music. Instead most people will nod their heads with bass-heavy hip-hop with the foul words scratched in reverse!!

dance and hipHop can co-exist..this poster,
its no secret, it should be about 65%dance/25%hiphop,
and 10%mainstream/90s Rock!! but..without the rock,
this formula of 70/30 for either genre having the
70 will work..again, if some work is done "behind the scenes"

Obviously, if the 70%hip hop, and of the 30%dance, songs
are like the macrena/cotteneyed joe,etc..etc. of course,
it will fail. On the contary, if the 30% of the hip Hop
is biz-markie, "here comes the hot-stepper"(etc)..again
it will not fly.

the careful mix of dance-remixes of "awesome"/popular
songs..and the "GREAT" hits from both genres, will
be a perfect playlist of a true party station...

ps: market #2 needs it.. BAD!!!

While I wouldn't object to trying a Dance format in the market again, the reality is that all the stations are owned by a handful of companies, and none of them have the courage to try it since KDL didn't do anything spectacular in terms of ratings or revenue.

I read on Don Barrett's page that Cumulus is out of the running for ABC stations. Too bad as I believe Cumulus has dance music stations in New Orleans and Baton Rouge called Diva, and maybe they might have tried it here, but then I don't know how big of a money maker KLOS is as that would have been the only station they could have tried it on.

The problem with KDL was, quite strangely, the station decided to go all-dance (including some pretty obscure, techno/trance heavy stuff). For a rhythmic to work, it has to balance out the dance with mainstream hip hop and R&B. KDL refused to play much, if any, hip hop -- I'm not sure they would have touched Black Eyed Peas' "My Humps," for example. But they would need to.

The Louisiana "Divas" are owned by Citadel.

You know that, and I know that, and a lot of people with no say in the matter know that.

But to the "suits" that run radio stations, the only fact is that KDL failed, therefore Dance is not something they want to risk their necks trying again.

If there is any moral to the story it is that if you are going to try something innovative, don't go off the deep end or not only will you fail, you will prevent someone else from trying it again the right way later.<P ID="signature">______________

i think the it also failed of the siginal plus playing no top 40 or hip hop

while everyone is partly right about why dance failed, I think signal had to do a lot with. 103.1 is a lousy frequency to try a format and expect the rating that stations like 102.7, 104.3 and 105.9 get. No comparison.

I think if Dance to Good ratings you have to add Whats Popular like Top 40 Hip Hop or rock

There is an Net Station theat is a Dance station Plays Mix of Top 40,Hip hop,80s&90s dance (Plus Alot 80s and 90s Dance used to be play on Power 106 )
