Dance Friendly Records Making A Comeback on Modern Rock Radio

We've been talking so much about Dance music starting to make its way back to Rhythmic CHRs that some of you may be overlooking the other side of Dance music - the one that leans Alternative. It was very common in the 80s to hear New Wave Dance on Alternative radio. It was also pretty common to hear some Electronica throughout much of the 90s, but at some point Modern Rock radio got almost identical in sound to Active Rock radio. While there have always been a few Modern Rockers that have never forgotten their roots, there are now more Modern Rock stations that are once again embracing some new Alternative Dance.

Pendulum's "Propane Nightmares" was a Top 10 hit on the Pop charts in the UK, and has received a significant amount of airplay in L.A. on 106.7 K-Rock and Indie 103.1. A lot of the Modern Rockers found on the West coast are playing it like Kwod 106.5 Sacramento, 92.9 KJEE Santa Barbara, 107.7 The End Seattle, Area 107.9 Las Vegas, KFMA 92.1 & 101.3 Tucson, 91 X San Diego, and 105.7 The Peak Spokane. Other stations airing it are pure/heritage Modern Rockers such as 101.7 FNX Boston, CD 101 Columbus, and 101 X Austin. Further support is coming from Alt Nation on Sirius XM, Radio 104.5 Philly, 105.1 Channel Q Des Moines, 104.5 & 104.9 The X Baton Rouge, 94.1 The Zone Rochester, and 106 G-Rock Radio in the Monmouth-Cean market.

MGMT with "Kids" is another popular tune on Modern Rock radio. It already went Top 20 in Australia and Ireland, and even went to number one in Norway. Strong support coming from San Francisco's Live 105, 106.7 K-Rock, and 107.7 The End Seattle, all heritage Modern Rockers. Another heritage Modern Rocker, 95.5 WBRU in Providence is giving it a good amount of spins alongside 102.7 EQX in Albany, Channel 104.9 San Jose, 96 X Norfolk, 101.7 FNX Boston, 91 X San Diego, 92.9 KJEE Santa Barbara, Indie in Los Angeles, 105.1 Channel Q Des Moines, 94.3 WCYY Portland (Maine), FM 949 San Diego, 103.9 The Edge in Phoenix, and Sirius XMU.

107.7 The End in Seattle actually has THREE songs from MGMT in rotation. Keep in mind this is the same market as our beloved C-89.5, a non-commercial Dance station, which as of this writing is sadly not playing any MGMT records...
But if there's any Modern Rock stations pushing forward the nu-Rave Alternative Dance acts the most it's the new 101.5 FM in Denver, and 105.1 Channel Q in Des Moines. These stations rock!

Here in Phx, Alternative station (for lack of a better term) The Edge 103.9 features Mix & Mash on Saturday nights. I've heard their resident Knick Knack do a whole set of 90's Electronica stuff like Busy Child, Smack My B*tch Up, Da Funk, Spin spin Sugar, etc. I'd like to see this become more common, but it's hard to stomach the C*ck Rock around it!
 
Actually CHRles, KNHC did play MGMT's "Electric Feel" and it was during their "Vortex" show, which airs on Saturday nights.

Well, KNHC does have a habit for playing tracks that is featured on "The Vortex" that later end up on the station's playlist. In other words, yes MGMT has picked up some play on the station, but not as much.
 
Another station you didnt mention that plays some of those songs is Z-Rock 107.5 in Pikeville KY.. Its actually a CHR/ROCK hybrid for those who havent listened http://www.1075zrock.com/
 
Also That Channel X 94 station in Utah is a pretty good ROCK/Chr hybrid,, I havent listened to it enough to be sure, but I would bet they are playing a few of those records too,, Also the Energie network in Canada which is a Rock leaned CHR network, but also somewhat dance friendly is playing Keane Spiralling which I consider a Dance/Alternative record..... Some of the other Rock Friendly CHRs on your list may also be playing some of these.
 
Interesting that you mentioned Keane. They're one of the few Rock acts you'll hear on Holland's Dance-Heavy station, Slam FM. They have 2 songs in rotation on Slam. Me personally I kinda view them more as this decade's answer to Oasis and Blur, AKA Britpop music. Not all that different from Coldplay. Speaking of which, "Lovers In Japan" is really growing on me.
