Dance friendly stations in New York state

nd2023

Banned
Yesterday I went to Syracuse. I heard a few dance tracks and pop remixes in rotation on the Syracuse University student station Z89.1. Z89 has a CHR format (there are 2 other commercial CHR stations in Syracuse), and it sounds like Now 92.3 but with a few dance songs in rotation. It would make sense for a 100 watt station like Z89 to have a pure dance or even a "party" format, instead of competing with a 100,000 watt and a 50,000 watt CHR station in the same market.

On my way home, I heard a dance mixshow on Fly 92.3 in Albany that sounded exactly like a Pulse 87 mixshow used to. "Sound of Missing You" was the first song I heard on 92.3 when I got in range of it, and I just could not believe that station would play that song!

And as soon as I got in range of 87.7, I heard some hip hop song I don't even know. :-(

If you liked Z-89 now, you would have LOVED it around 1992 or so when the playlist really leaned on dance music. There were also a couple of stations in the Rome-Utica area that were dance, about 15 years ago known as WOW-FM (105.5, 97.9), and during the 80's there was a station on 107.3. Kingston, NY had B-94 (WBPM) back in the mid 90's. All of the people living near Buffalo were pulling in Energy 108 from Burlington, Ontario during the 90's, though for a brief moment there was 101.1, The Planet out of Niagara Falls, ON playing dance music back then as well, though for a brief period.

I think WVCR (88.3 - Siena College, Albany) still plays a bit of dance at times.

Perhaps the one station that may be as close to dance friendly as possible around here is WSPK (K-104, Poughkeepsie)....and even that, they were VERY dance music friendly during the mid 90's.
