Dance is back on 87.7 FM

Tonight I heard dance music on 87.7! I first heard the David Guetta remix of I Gotta Feeling. At first I thought Pulse was back on the radio and I'm sure you all know how excited I was. Then I hear that it's a mixshow called Radio Positive. The DJ on the air was giving out tickets to Electric Zoo, something Pulse did last year! He was speaking half English and half Russian, but the music was in English or instrumental.

I know I should have gotten the thought of dance music on 87.7 out of my head months ago, but I was tuning around checking for DX and stumbled on dance music on 87.7 tonight.

Alex of the bankrupt Mega Media Group told me that he decided to switch the format of 87.7 from Russian to dance because the Russian station wasn't attracting too many listeners and it was not making money. Perhaps the new leasees of 87.7 realized the same thing, that dance has been proven to attract a million listeners to an out of the way spot on the dial.

While what we really need is dance on a full power signal that isn't 87.7, I'll take what we have!

Do I really ask this? Okay....I suppose I must. For the sake of the movement. ::)

1) Do you expect people to learn Russian just because dance music is there? I know people are hungry for dance music to return to the NYC radio dial but I would think, I suppose because we live here in the US, that people want their music and presentation totally in ENGLISH. Radio Positiva may serve their audience well...but we are not that audience.

2) Enjoy your 87.7 because when we get a station ABOVE 92.1 somewhere, you'll be left in the dust. Just a matter of time.

3) If a new station doesn't call themselves "Pulse", but plays similar music as that station, LEAVE THEM ALONE! DON'T DO A CAMPAIGN TO HAVE THEM BECOME "PULSE". Please! Take heart to what I'm saying here. Take what we have, remember? You just said that.

I really hate to come off this way. I do. People that know me well know that I'm really a nice guy that takes the interests of dance fans to heart. I was saddened just like everyone else that Pulse 87 and Party FM left the airwaves on 87.7. But I've moved on and am moving forward and as such, dance music fans here have to do the same thing. The hardest part of this is the fact that you still plenty of folks out there that never "let go" of Pulse 87 (on 87.7). Pulse is good for the Internet but I would want to see another corporation/station on the FM dial do dance in similar fashion. If some of the Pulse 87 on-air personalities get a job there, that's great! But seriously, we are not going to get anywhere if we continue to live in the past. Treasure Pulse 87 for what it was from Feb. '08 to Oct. '09. Continuing to mourn on a "grave" isn't healthy for anyone.

Seriously.

I was aware of Radio Positiva airing a friday mixshow months ago. I am used to foreign language radio jocks talking during a dance station, or programming, well because I also listen to dance stations around the world. SKY FM based out of Paris, France was the first foreign station I listened to once I started to explore stations out of the US. But yea, no 87.7 when a dance format comes back to NYC. Energy, Vibe, or even something different like Blazin' or Jammin' :) (No, not the Jammin 105 version) I'm talking about a high energy, today's hottest jams type.

one million Elvis fans can't be wrong!....

It is not necessary to know how to speak Russian to enjoy listening to 'Radio Pozitiv'.

Well neither was Pulse making money. Probably the reason for both formats failure was the exorbitant cost to lease WNYZ-LP from Island Broadcasting. Ethnic programming can be very profitable. The shows operate with a different business model than larger stations. Advertisers are loyal and they do not care about ratings. They advertise because they like the programming, and the show has an ethnic audience the advertiser wants to reach who will support their business. I still believe that Alex Shvarts made a bad business decison.

For anyone that is interested, the DJ who hosts the dance music show on 'Radio Pozitiv' has a website. You can see him at work at the 'Radio Pozitiv' studio, shown on the 3rd and 4th YouTube videos at this link:

Let me just put it this way: Pulse 87 was billing well in excess of the cost of the lease, over a million dollars a year in ad revenue, and could have made the payments on its lease, plus covered all of its other expenses, but bad money management and the millions of dollars of debt Mega Media was in (mostly from lawsuits against the company dating back to 2004) when Pulse launched basically doomed it from the start. I invested a lot of money in the company and lost everything, and I went to bankruptcy court 3 times and analyzed its finances that were made public with the bankruptcy filing.

Pulse 87 was just a pail to remove the water from the sinking Mega Media ship.

I'm assuming you work there.

And to be fair about it, I did take a listen to DJ Pushkin and yes, it's in English. The gist of what I wrote wasn't meant as a bash to Radio Pozitiv; rather than it was just to say that for the station that it is, it serves its audience well. And it does go by what you say about ethnic programming being very profitable.

It's just that when some people speak about 87.7 (and I am NOT singling out one person in here because there are others out there that say this as well), they want Pulse to return there in the worst way and, IMHO, I think it's time that people move forward from that. DJ Pushkin does a good job, but then based on what he's doing, people are thinking that Pulse has to be back, when in all actuality, Radio Positiv has to be its OWN brand/identity for the purpose of serving the Russian community that tunes in.

I guess this is just a mixshow on weekends. I know we will never get Pulse back, and it is better to get a full power commercial dance station on a frequency everyone in the market can tune to. But it sure was nice for me to hear dance on 87.7 that one night and just imagine that Pulse was back, since after Party left, I never would have expected to hear dance on 87.7 again. With that, let this be my last post about dance music on 87.7 or Pulse coming back to the radio or the Mega Media Group.

It won't be. In a few weeks something else will give about 87.7 somewhere and you'll post about it. :-\
