Dance might come to Ottawa via Z-1035 owners

Their website says they are expanding and plan to launch another Z-1035 type station in Ottawa... I just hope its not too much like the Z-1035 in Halifax,,, that station doesnt play near as much dance as the Toronto Z-1035..... DIDnt Hot 88.9 try dance at first with 88.9 THE PLANET, but flipped it to Hot 88.9 as a rhythmic shortly after???? Hot 88.9 is a CHR now, so I would think this new station would have to play some Dance to differenciate themselves.

Well, Evanov does own Adult Standards CJWL (98.5 The Jewel) in Ottawa, so I wouldn't be surprised if they do launch one. But the question is where they are going to find a frequency for the format.

IDK Robert... The Z1035 website tells more about it, but doesnt mention a frequency,, they said they station will include Hip Hop and R&B and Rock and POP,,,, it didnt mention dance, but they listed some of the artists the station would be playing, and some of those are dance DJs or artists.. I know this isnt in the U.S,,, but at least its in North America.. Ottawa years ago had an AM station called Energy 1200,, and it was top 40 Dance like Z-1035,, it used to boom into Indiana at night, but it disappeared in like 95, and I now hear San Antonio on 1200 at night. I wonder if Energy 108, or Energy 1200 came first, Im always wondering who was the very first original Energy.. I know of Energy 96.5 in Houston, but I think it was mostly just CHR,,, and a short lived Energy 95.1 in Midland Texas, that shortly after flipped to Alternative as The X. I think Montreal, Vancouver, and Anchorage Alaska could all support a Dance Top 40 hybrid,,, they all have only one CHR on the air, if that, and have club scenes. In Vancouver, Z-95.3 was Dance Heavy in the early to mid 90s, it was also one of the early streamers back in the day. If nothing else, maybe Mix 96 could bring back their Nightly Live to Air dance shows, and the new 95.3 The Crave which is Rhythmic AC could play some current Dance, and in Anchorage, either Kfat 92.9 could add some POp and Dance, or the new Movin up there could play some as well.

The Ottawa region (which also includes parts of Quebec) has a significant dance music market there so I would think this station would lean like a Z103.5 in T.O. versus Halifax, where the dance/urban crowd are a blended mix. The French-Canadian dance music influence is definitely there in Ottawa so I could see this working out for Evanov.

The Z-1035 in Halifax plays more rap and less dance and rock than the Toronto one... Plus, they seem to mainly play House music when they do play dance, which seems to only be maybe twice an hour, where Z-1035 in Toronto seems to favor Euro and plays almost 50 percent dance in some dayparts.

A Dance friendly or Dance leaning station in Ottawa would be awesome!
A few pointers in regards to this post concerning Halifax: It's a much smaller market then Ottawa, let alone Toronto. Up until just a couple of years ago Halifax only had C-100 for hit music, and C-100 always leaned Adult.
Soon after Z-103.5 arrived on the scene Halifax got a SECOND youth-friendly CHR in 101.3 The Bounce. It plays a lot of Hip Hop, which the 18-34 crowd more then likely loves hearing on their radio for a change. This has likely forced Z-103.5 to step up their efforts on that front as well.
Ottawa already has 3 CHRs in Hot 89.9, as well ass two Rock friendly French-speaking CHRs (Energie and Tag Radio). Throughout the 90s Ottawa's main CHR was Adult leaning Kool FM (though I believe Energie was also around). Since that time the excellent Hot 89.9 arrived on the scene, the market has a Modern Rock station, a Hot A/C outlet, and continues to have a pretty strong Dance scene. The time may be right for a Z-103.5 type of station to hit the market.
Back to Toronto, I would say that Z-103.5's biggest competitors in the market right now are Hip Hop station Flow 93.5, as well as the new Virgin 99.9. Virgin is the old Mix FM, and while it's still Adult friendly it now plays titles like Flo-Rida "In The Ayer" and TI's "Whatever You Like".

That new Virgin 99.9 in Toronto is like a Rhythmic AC at night,,, plus they have CHUm which is basically CHR without the hard rock and Urban,,, Kinda like Modern AC,,,, and they also have Energy 105.1 competing with the dance crowd, though we dont know what kind of signal they have.. And of course The Edge 102.1 for Modern Rock, Really Toronto has almost everything other than dance covered, but listeners who like a variety wont have to flip stations, plus I will bet Z does pretty well with the 25-54 too, since they grew up on Euro Dance from Hot 103.5, Energy, Power,, 640 AM ETC... plus Z plays some 80s and 90s party hits that other CHRs no longer play.

Chum 104.5 is a brilliant Hot A/C, and one of the most successful and prominent on the continent. It's radio done right with great personalities, and a good music mix that includes 80s and 90s titles (hence not a CHR) without being overly conservative on new music. Chum kinda sets the tone for a lot of other Hot A/Cs and even CHRs when it comes to new music. For example, they were big supporters of Kardinal Offishal's "Dangerous". Contrast that with some of the CHRs in the US, especially the Cumulus owned ones where "Dangerous" only receives night-time play. Kevin Rudolf is also receiving a lot of spins at Chum.
As for Virgin, they probably did a smart thing by adding Ryan Seacrest to both their nightly and weekend lineup (AT 40 used to air on Z-103.5 but not anymore). They definitely dont sound like a Rhythmic AC at night as their very current-based. I wish some of the Rhythmic ACs in America sounded like it. Can you imagine Movin in San Francisco and L.A., or The Party in Denver renaming and retooling themselves after Virgin 99.9? Virgin still plays a few select 80s titles, but I'm guessing those will be gone in the coming months.
The official playlist for Virgin currently looks like this:

Canadian Hot ACs are looser on rhythmic product as a whole than their American counterparts.  Q94 in Winnipeg played Flo-Rida, Kardinal Offishall (he's from Canada), Kanye West, etc. before it flipped to Curve 94.3.  By American standards, some Canadian Hot ACs can arguably be classified as adult-leaning CHRs or Rhythmic ACs.  CANCON is the reason why there's plenty of Canadian artists getting airplay.

I think CHUM and Virgin are both awesome stations,,, Virgin is rhythmic leaned at night and most of the day, but unlike the american counter parts, they dont lean on gold, that arguably doesnt mean arent like a Rhythmic AC, as its kind of a loose format that could be anything. KTU is a rhythmic AC and so was Mix 102.7 NYC,, but neither of those stations sounded anything like the rest of the countries Rhythmic ACs,, also Movin 101.1 was a rhythmic AC,, but except for the very beginning, they were sounding like a very well balanced Hot AC, mixing Rhythm and Rock together.... Denver's Party plays more older mowtown type stuff that other rhythmic ACs dont play in order to fill the Urban AC void in D-Town... Also, in Myrtle Beach, one of the places I used to live,, their Movin Rhythmic AC plays music just from the 60s to the 80s,,, more like Jammin Oldies,,, this is probably due to 99.9 up the road in Wilmington which was 100kw and a decent signal in town,, plus 99.7 in Charlestown is a Jammin Oldies too, and im sure their signals all overlap. During the Off Season, their arent that many kids and young people in town at Myrtle beach, its like deserted during the winter,,, this is partly why the Cumulous CHR never got any ratings at all.

But yeah, CHUM is an awesome station, and I wish Hot AC in the US where like this,,, we have a decent Hot AC here with B-102.7 that has a pretty loose rhythmic policy, but its dayparted like Mix 108 in Dultuth,,, But some CHRs in other countrys will play some 80s and 90s hits, it doesnt mean they cant be CHR.... Nile Fm in Cairo Egypt plays alot of 80s and 90s retro,, some of which I wouldnt even attempt on Hot AC in the states. I know why B-102.7 plays some 80s during the day and dayparts the Urban to after 6 PM like Mix 108 in Duluth, and thats to keep the station at work office friendly during the day,,, but their is no reason for a CHR to daypart a fairly harmless unoffensive record like Kardinal Offshore-Dangerous,,, we played the heck out of that song and never had any complaints from morning at work listeners either,,, the only recent popular Urban song we dayparted, but only till after 3 Pm was LIL Waynes Lolipop,, This was my decision because alot of our older 25-54 Demo, which is really who we target the most would complain about hearing it at work or in the morning,, but when the kids get outta school, they start calling in for it, so we would play it after 3 PM.. Our GM is kinda conservative about profanity, even if its legal by FCC standards,, Like we play the clean versions of Saving Abel-addicted, and Rehab-Bartender song..... This is so people can play us at work, and also kids and parents can both enjoy the station together in the car without offending the parents themselves, or not wanting their kids exposed to the language. Now up the road at WNOU,,, Radio Now 100.9, they are much more loose on their edited versions,, But their cluster already owns an Urban AC with high ratings to bring in the 25-54 demo, so WNOU can be more youth friendly and rap friendly than us,,, but counter to that, we can get away with playing more Dance music than they can, so every station has to serve what their community deams acceptable and what their listeners say is a hit..
