Dance Music Format in Philadelphia?

Why can't we not chastise a genre of music we don't like?

I happen to like 50s/60s doo-wop and current dance. I get just as excited hearing the Ronettes as I do hearing Avicii (just not back to back on the same station). I wish we had a station like Easy 93.1 in Miami, with soft AC on the HD1 and current dance on the HD2.

In the past whenever someone brought up the topic of dance music in Philadelphia, there always has been the "filly needz a dans stayshun" backlash.

Z88.9's weak in Philly and its signal is blocked by the buildings in Philly, but it's listenable and it can be heard well in much of NJ south of 195.

WRDW-HD2 is a Dance CHR. If we want a dance station in Philly, that's the best we've got. Unless Greater Media wants to try something ambitious (being that they have a few failing formats) Clear Channel, doesn't even operate a single dance station in the country, and I doubt there is a single one operating on FM that's commercial. (not HD/AM/XM).

Sadly, I think a Dance CHR would pull at least a 2.0 in this city, Philadelphia has always been a party-ish city. And with the Delaware Ave additions (sugarhouse) - plus we have a lot of clubs.

I'm sure if done right it could attract young listeners.

After all, Sweedish House Mafia is a huge group right now (one I happen to enjoy).

Dubstep is also pretty hugely popular with kids in college now-a-days. Some alternative stations toss in Dubstep now. MMR plays a modern song by Korn that features a Dubstep group, in fact, that entire album is Dubstep groups and Korn. So there is a foundation in current media.

My final verdict, it won't happen unless the demand (continues to) grows for the genre, but I'd like to see it happen!

Clear Channel does have a few dance mixshows: Buzz Radio on Kiss 95.7 in CT and the House Party on 93.3 FLZ in Tampa, just to name a few. They operate dance formatted KDWB-HD2 and its 102.5 translator in Minneapolis (albeit with no promotion and the fact that 102.5's signal only goes a few miles, and the format will probably change once it upgrades the translator's power).

WISX airs a dance format show Friday nights I believe.

106 does a live broadcast from the Coastline on Friday nights. It is dance driven but also needs to stick around their playlist, but they play more back in the day than what you would consider pure dance. They do air the Remix Top 30 with Hollywood Hamilton, which again is very similar to KTU's playlist. Z889 also airs this show at 9 pm.

Mix 106.1 is a station that compares to KTU, Q102, Z-100, Wired. It does not play back in the day hits, it basically plays hit music but will play songs that were huge, from a modern artist that sang a hit in 90's (Bon Jovi)

It dropped 80's a few months ago (Early November).
Then dropped (just a guess, a bit less then half) 40% of it's already scarce 90's songs it played. Since then it added commercial free hours, Wendy Wild as a mid-day host (yes, from KTU, but she does pre-recorded for ISX, sometimes live)

I've listened to Mix since it debuted. It's debut is November 11th, 2010. Tuned in six days after, wanting to check out My 106.1, very happy to see the format change. (I joined these boards in 2011).

I was talking about their coastline live broadcast. They mix it up but it includes back in the day songs. Trust me thats who goes to the coastline on Friday nights. Its the people that used to listen to Q102 in the early 90's

Drive down I-95 it comes in and we get a ton of calls from people driving there.
