Dance Music: Locals VS Bennies

A weird topic to start but just something to share. This past saturday, I happen to be around Pt. Pleasant/Maasquan area promoting 967party.com. Now, I am surprised some of the bumpers that I posted were still around, not to mention a few others that fans of the station had stuck around, but one thing that threw me off guard but was no shock to me, I noticed a "Benny Go Home" logo posted on top of the 96.7 Party logo covering the website. Now, there are those haters out there and I am aware of that, but the labeling of dance music has gotten way out of hand. I realize I shouldn't think this way, but that makes it seem that the "Benny Go Home" campaign labels 96.7 Party as a "station for Bennies" as what they call people from Northern NJ and NY. But it just so happens to be that 96.7 Party was launched from Oakhurst, which is where I resided. So, if 96.7 Party is just for "Bennies", then what do you call the "locals" that enjoy dance music and listen to the stream? Sure, there are 96.7 Party logos around the hot spots, like on Main Street, the boardwalks, and the train stations, but don't forget, those logos are up all year round, and "Bennies" don't stay at the Jersey Shore after Labor Day, which means there are those "locals" that will tune in and set the preset as their favorite if they like it. Sorry to say, but I realize stations like mine and Hit 106 aren't popular, but they are broadcasting from the "local" grounds. Maybe it's just me or has this issue with the "locals" and the "bennies" gone too far?

Well, hm. I'm kind of confused about the dividing line, and I'd think the Shore has its share of "party" fans (heck, I'm thinking of launching such a station myself. Bit more of an alt lean from me, of course.)

Maybe it's just the latest incarnation of the "Disco Sucks" meme - remember how while all the rock stations were pushing the "Disco Sucks" meme, bands like Blondie, The Clash and Talking Heads were embracing it?

I think haters will just hate on things, because they're haters. It's what they do. I'd ignore it - the right people will get it.

Isn't Oakhurst, NJ the location of the WQXR translator on 96.7 FM, W244AS? Has a pirate taken over the transmitter, or is W244AS now translating some other station?

Alright, I admit, yes it was a pirate back in 03, then WQXR popped the transmitter in 04, so ever since W244AS came, 96.7 Party has been online. But now since the deal with WQXR and Univision has happened, Im not sure if classical will stay on W244AS or if La Kalle will be simulcasting on that transmitter.

99.3 & 105.5 The Buzz got very good ratings when they had a Dance music format so it's not just a Benny / Shoobie format!

However, Hit 106.5 truly is a Shoobie/Bennie station. There's almost no local content at all for Ocean County, or the station's county of licence Burlington County.

The traffic reports are all for North Jersey roads that locals never go near.
The commercials are all for North Jersey bars/restaurants/stores that locals would have to drive 1 hour or more to.
The DJs sound like they're straight out of New York.
The concerts they promote are all in North Jersey or NY, while locals tend to go to Atlantic City/Camden/Philly.
The station doesn't even have a local 609 phone number, just the generic toll-free line.

I know a lot of year 'round residents who are still listening to Q102 or 99.3 Kiss FM and passing over 106.5. However, I see plenty of cars with NY plates blasting Hit 106.5...

It sounds like you're talking about The Hawk!!

The station mostly targets Monmouth and northern Ocean Counties because that's where the money is. This is definitely the first time I've ever heard Monmouth/Ocean residents called bennies or shoobies.

106.5 may be licensed to Burlington County, but it's the very southeastern corner of the county and the transmitter is in Ocean County. They're not going to cover Burlington County because they can't be heard in much of the county. You want them to talk about Mt. Holly even though they have no listeners there?

Yes, I'm sure no locals ever take the GSP or 195.

The commercials are all for North Jersey bars/restaurants/stores that locals would have to drive 1 hour or more to.

Locals does not mean just you. Many listeners are within half hour driving distance of bars in places like Seaside or Mantoloking.

The DJs sound like they're straight out of New York.

I haven't listened to the morning show, but you can't honestly say Matt Knight (who was a B98.5 and G-Rock jock) and Scott Lowe (a Trenton/Philly/Allentown jock in the past) sound like New Yorkers.

The concerts they promote are all in North Jersey or NY, while locals tend to go to Atlantic City/Camden/Philly.

I'll reiterate that locals does not mean just you. Even places as far south as Toms River aren't that much closer to Camden than say, the Meadowlands.

The station doesn't even have a local 609 phone number, just the generic toll-free line.

Why would the area code of the phone number matter? Is someone really going to associate a toll-free number with being from New York?

You seem to want the station to cover the vast area of trees and wetland that is southeastern Burlington/southern Ocean counties rather than targeting the places people actually live. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why they're not going to do that.

I did hear a few ads for businesses in LBI and atlantic city events on Hit, then again that's the only time I listen to Hit when there's nothing on Now, Z, KTU, or if I can't pick up Pulse

Hey. I live in Mt Holly, and 106.5 is my second pre-set! (104.5 is first)
