DANCE MUSIC....OKAY BOSTON, YOU ARE NEXT!

For those of you that happen to peek at the New York forum, a new rhythmic station has been launched...Pulse 87. It took quite a while to fill a void down this way but it happened! And now, we want to keep pushing for more radio stations to consider a current based rhythmic format throughout the country. We are now targeting Philadelphia and Boston for our campaign.

Now, even though I don't live in the Boston area, I do know some history....mainly with Kiss 108 back in the 90's and Star 93.7 as of recent. I also know that Boston MAINLY is a rock oriented city. Though from what I understand, there is a small but lively dance music scene there, as well as outer areas (Providence, RI, Fall River, New Bedford, Lawrence). As such, with all of the obstacles, I do believe a current rhythmic leaning station could work out in Boston.

Just need some feedback on this

24 Hours of Donna Summer ( Boston Dance Queen ) ! Thats Better than all these Sh-tty Rock Stations In Boston !

I used to enjoy Star 937, but I guess that they can make a lot more money by just playing music and not having to pay the talent. If you are thinking of an HD radio, they still program sort of Star (calling it "Funkytown" now) on WMKK-HD2. And WSRS-HD2 in Worcester is programming what they call "Pride" radio which is mostly dance music (not the classic disco era...current stuff...and targeted to a gay audience).

I did drive out to New Bedford and caught Star 93.7 on I-195 (when it was WQSX). We have a station in New York...103.5 'KTU and a lot of current dance music fans would complain that they didn't do enough for currents....eventually they went rhythmic A/C. Anyway, hearing Star at that time, I actually thought it sounded WORSE than 'KTU did, and I didn't think anyone could do that.

Actually, the WSRS-HD2 is the same as the WKSS-HD2 feed in Hartford with "Pride" radio. I've heard it online and some of the music is current. But, unfortunately, there are those out there still "homophobic" and even though there is good dance music at times, they might feel "slighted" by listening to a "gay" station. Pride CAN do more but it is a start.

And Donna Summer? If she comes out with something new...BRING IT! Otherwise, 'KTU down here does play "McArthur Park" and "Hot Stuff" at LEAST 7,366 times a day! LOL

after being subjected to the 17 minute cover of "MacArthur Park" night after night in my BU dorm room in '78-79 (by Disco Ken, my next door neighbor), I can honestly say that if I ever hear that song again, I don't think I could be held responsible for my potential actions. :D

Wow, now that Tony Santiago has posted a message on a radio board "targeting" Boston, the corporate boys have no choice but to listen to what he has to say!?!

I sure damn hope so! ;) I'll grab an Acela if I have to :)

Star did better than Mike and they were not good.
I think it would work if done with a local vibe.

You know what I find shockingly amazing??

I thought I was going to get more HELL on this board regarding my thoughts. Yet it seems like the majority of you are receptive to the idea. I post the same thing in the Philly board and I'm getting reamed! :D

Guess I'll keep hammering Philly more...LOL!

So what exactly is meant by "Dance"? Should I assume that Fred Astaire is right out?

When I hear "Dance" I think hip-hop, which as far as I'm concerned is as far from dancing as you could get.

Brittany Spears either just moves her arms like a robot or strips.

Does "Dance" have anything to do with that GOD AWFUL "movie" that's coming out now?

Oh well. Any such radio station to take on that kind of format will have no effect on MY radar.

Yeah...I'm afraid Fred Astaire doesn't qualify in this version :)

What we are talking about is "rhythmic"...which is more club oriented dance music (NOT hip-hop). More like what is out there in the clubs (house, trance, freestyle, electro). Kinda like what Star 93.7 (when it was WQSX) had but more edgier.

Click "Listen" on the link below and you'll get an idea.

Tony,

All power to you. However, I doubt I'd give up Sirius 36 The Beat, having no commercials.

Star 93.7 was pretty good (especially in '04 when they leaned current). However, their 80s music was wasted on cheesy Freestyle when they should have been playing the cool stuff (New Wave i.e. the Shep Pettibone remix of New Order's Bizarre Love Triangle; Pet Shop Boys, Heaven 17, etc.).

It was hard to share the station with big haired cougars from Revere.

How about a Kiss 100/London kind of sound?

Pardon me for being blunt, but the reason you are not getting more hell is because most of the people on this board know that your master plan, although viable in your mind, is ridiculous. While I admire your passion for the format, dance is NOT a mainstream format that will get the cume needed to sell the product in Boston. You complain about KTU, but the station has more mass appeal than Pulse does (not to say that won't change) and for that reason, it will always bill more.

I wish you and the NY Dance Coalition well in your attempt to get the format on from coast-to-coast, but it's not gonna happen! I think I am going to start my own coalition to get more cowbell back into rock & roll!!

If Dance music were indeed to return to Boston, the only company that would even foresee-ably program it would be CBS, and even then they wouldn't want to take away from either their Mix audience or blow up any of their other stations at all.

Off topic for a sec, I had Sirius myself and went over to XM. It was the BEST thing I could do! The Beat really STINKS! They play older (as in 3 to 5 years ago) material as if it was CURRENT. I used to tune in to Area 33 instead but at times the station would sound TOO hardcore. Anyway, I went over to XM. If you want to get an idea what we're looking for from that...go to Channel 81 (BPM). Now THAT is a rhythmic station! Mainly current and pretty "dead on" to what core fans can appreciate.

weei could try 'dancing with the stars' with pete the meat on play-by-play for overnights. it's better than the fox sports crap they currently run.

EXACTLY!

Of all of the companies that own FM stations in the Boston market, only CBS and Clear Channel would conceivably program something like dance or - even more needed - urban. Clear Channel has a lock on everything "rhythmic" in Boston through Jamn and Kiss (neither of which is very good, musically) and they're not going to change a thing. And, as said above, it's pretty unlikely that CBS would blow something up to program a rhythmic format. Entercom is focused on looking for new platforms for the WEEI format and Greater Media is just not that adventurous. This leaves the unoriginal Nassau (who thinks that Kiss 108 is a "dance" station; they're so NOT rhythmic) and the Phoenix, who isn't changing a thing with WFNX. I think that about covers it on the commercial side, unless I forgot someone. The rest are suburban rimshots who wouldn't do much good because they don't come in well enough in the city.

In other words, the stalemate continues in Boston. Basically, about 19 of the top 20 markets are more likely to adopt a dance formatted station than Boston is. Tony my friend, as much as I like your ideas, you're barking up the wrong tree on this one.
