Dance pirate station on 96.9

nd2023

Banned
Last week, I remember hearing a pirate station while going west on I-95. Near the CT/RI border, I tuned to 96.9 and heard dance music. At first, I thought it was a translator for Party 105.3. Then, the DJ said "96.9, The Techno Party". It faded away in New London because of interference from WHBE 96.7. Anyone else hear this pirate station?

Nope. Not a pirate. 96.9FM is a Low-Power FM station licensed to Ashaway, RI (I believe Ashaway is a part of Westerly, though I could be wrong.) Call letters are WCTD-FM, website is http://www.969theparty.com/

And according to radio-info.com, their fringe contour reaches Mystic.

It's perfectly legal. ;o)

WCTD-LP. It's part of Hopkington.

Well that could be disputed...

TXEngineer -

I've never actually listened to it... I'm on the other side of the RI, so I couldn't pick it up if I wanted to... but judging from their website, they use the term "underwriting" very loosely, never explaining the non-commercial implications of it. So I will definately defer to your opinion and replace my previous statement with : "It should be legal."

Also, I stand corrected on the actual town. ;o)

Hopkinton, RI is its own municipality. It's where you enter RI from CT on I-95. Anyway, I've also heard that "underwriting" line on WTCC-FM 90.7 of Springfield, MA (Springfield Technical Community College).

WTCC has been following the underwriting rules to the letter of the law.
If you listen to their broadcasts, the underwriting spots are within the scope of what the FCC will allow. They are very good about that, much better than some other non-comm's on the dial.
