Dance Radio in 2006

It will be a interesting year to say the least. We might see more acceptance for dance music at CHRs and CHR/Rhythmics then we've seen in the last couple of
years and mabye even a regular radio station or two might pop up. But the big story I feel will be the explosion of HD-2 stations devoted to Dance Music. Quite a few cities will likely feature such channels as a compliment to a CHR/Pop or Rhythmic station.

But the big question will be, which station/stations will elect to take the bait in the year of 2006?

We have so far
WBBM-2 Chicago
WPOW-2 Miami
WRDW-2 Philly

These markets will be ones to watch

Los Angeles: KIIS-2 or KPWR-2. You guys might say, Emmis? But KPWR still features Powertools which is a Underground dance show hosted by Richard Humpty Vission and Swedish Eagle, and Richard has been with Power for so many years. Plus, they have a classic dance mix every friday and wern't they listed as adding Hung Up from Madonna recently? Yes, they are where Hip Hop lives, but that dance past still rings loud and clear.

New York WKTU-2: This is Obvious

San Francisco KYLD-2: Another Obvious Choice

Dallas Kiss 106.1-2

Houston KBRE-2

Detroit: Q955-2

Boston WMJM-2 or Kiss 108-2: Either or. Kiss was always known to break stuff out and of course you all remember Star 93.7 right?

Seattle Kiss 106.1-2 or KUBE-2: Yes, you have C89.5, but still, there's a opportunity.

Indianapolis: WNOU-2. Doubt Radio One would consider WHHH-2

Phoenix: KZZP-2 or KKFR-2: Although KKFR dropped their dance show a while back.

Albuquerque KKSS-2 or KKOB-2: But would our resident David Eduardo consider such a thing at the Univision owned Rhythmic considering he hasn't thought too much of the genre's commercial potential lately?

St Louis KSLZ-2: Yes, STL is famous for dem St Lunitics and Papa Nelly, but Clubber has stated Z does have mixshows with Dance.

Nashville: A long shot market, because it's percieved as a country music town, but WRVW-2 might do it.

Las Vegas KLUC-2: Viva Dancing Vegas!

Salt Lake City Another long shot market because of it's mormon religious image, but either KUUU-2 or KHZT-2 might look at the possibility.

Denver: KQKS. Will KS remember their 104.3 days or does the current mangement staff only think of 107.5 and Hip Hop?

Portland: KXJM-2 or Z100-2

Tampa: WFLZ-2 or WLLD-2

Orlando: WXXL-2 or WPYO-2(wouldn't it be funny to have dance back on 95.3 via HD-2)

Washington DC: WPGC-2

Norfolk: Z104-2

Kansas City: KCHZ-2 or KMXV-2

Tulsa: KTBT-2

Oklahoma City: KKWD-2

It's what I could think of. If you have other markets/ideas too, feel free to share.

And have a happy new year folks!

As far as WHHH is concerned, I wouldnt rule out the possibility of Hot 96 going HD2 Dance. WHHH remained dance Friendly untill about 2000-2001. Even Shortly after when WHHH-HOT 96.3 became Number one for Hip Hop and R&B, they still were playing a few dance songs, like Madonna-Die Another Day. Plus, WHHH plays Oldschool Dance every Friday at Noon, for the Old School (Mickey Fickey Mix). Another Market, and station that might go HD2 is Hot 93.3 in AUSTIN, the former MEGA 93.3, maybe they will bring Dance Back to the HD2 signal. Also, maybe Louisville Kentucky might get a 99.7 Wdjx HD2, or a 98.9 Kiss fm HD2,

Not for nothing all you are stating is HD-2 Stations who is going to lay out the huge $$$$ involved to receive HD Radio???? By the time it takes off and becomes affordable Satellite will already have a huge head start in market share. I am all for creating more dance channels but why does it have to be on a HD-2 channel that no one can receive????

Plus the signal is comparable to what a 3,000 watt station radius is today. So even more people won't be able to hear it or they'll get fustrated by it dropping out all the time.

I hear the arguments here and all are valid. Yet radio has to do SOMETHING to hook people back to their "product". They not only lost folks to satellite radio, but to streaming independent Internet feeds as well as iPods. If HD-2 is going to create a dent, then regardless of the quirks, these companies have to do some compelling programming in their markets to get people to want to tune in. The same way back in the 50's when television set sales went up because people wanted to see Uncle Milty (Milton Berle)...and on a New York front, the same way WKTU (Disco 92) got many listeners to jump off the AM bandwagon.

If dance can do that for HD-2, then great for us!

Here's a few more:

Milwaukee:Given its history with Dance on the airwaves when WLUM was "HOT 102", we could see Rhythmic-leaning WXSS launching a Dance spinoff.

Sacramento:KSFM could also be a candidate for a HD2 spinoff.

Honolulu:Of the three Rhythmics in the market, KIKI looks like they could pull it off.

El Paso:KPRR might also take the plunge into HD2 territory.

Because Satellite radio has been failing in the dance market area. Most of the stuff on Satellite radio is pure garbage.
