Dance Station in Columbus OH

Trying to see what everyone thoughts would be on a dance radio station coming to Columbus, OH. Looking to see if a format like Hot 105.7 and Hot 107.1 would be a hit? Basically having dance music along with urban and then throw in mix shows catering to house, dance, techno, and hip hop on weekends.

I personally think it would work. I think it would give Power and NCI a run for their money. Or should say "a panic state of mind" at least. Not sure who would be willing to do the flip and take the chance. ;D

There's a few of us who have been around here since the original radio-info days. Ever since radio-info used to be nothing but a dark blue background with white font on an old school style forum and believe me, many people including myself have lobbied for those kind of formats for years!

It's funny now that I look back on it but I used to get banned from this site so many times because of it that I can't even remember how many different user names I had back in the day. :p

Maybe a format on lines of Party 93.1 in Miami, FL. ::)

I wouldn't say it can't work...because there probably is a city or two in America with enough potential listeners to support such a format. But, so far, the track record of the format is not impressive. I don't think a dance station would work in every community, though. It's too small a niche for a number of cities.

It does seem odd that, with so many college students at Ohio State, Columbus would not have a radio station geared toward them. I can't believe college students like country, Wags, or Sunny. WNCI is for little girls who follow the Twilight saga. CD 101 (or whatever is it is now is just too unpolished.

Given how must clubs play dance music, and college students go to clubs, I would think a dance station would work.

There are several stations geared toward the college crowd. College kids also like NCI and you'd be surprised about how many college students love country. (I'm a recent-ish college grad) CD102 does well with the more "hip" crowd, as not every person wants to hear stp or foo fighters every hour. And Columbus has hip hop, which plays most of the music college kids dance to. I've never heard more than a few EDM songs at any club or party, hip hop is dance to college kids.
If by "geared toward them", you mean focusing on osu students, that format would not be able to pay it's bills, as spot rates can't be too high when you're aiming at kids living off of student loans. But there are several stations that make osu some part of their target.

Exactly -- College age folks I know listen to Power 107.5, WNCI, WCOL or CD102 (if their the "hipster" short north type) or RadioU... So Columbus radio is quite cratered to the spectrum of those who choose radio over iPod, Pandora.

Furthermore...

Country music these days can get a large share of 18-34 year old listeners, whether some of you want to believe it or not.

What do you think is fueling the youth movement among country artists these days?

I am not the right one to ask about country. Last time I thought about country, "new" was Billy Achy Breaky and that other guy Foster Brooks - er, um - not Foster - Garth Brooks.
