Daniel is out at 104.1, so what's next for the Monsters?

Daniel is out at 104.1, so what's next for the Monsters? Was this really a contract dispute, or had things finally come to a head with Russ? Makes you wonder whether there is about to be another round of housecleaning at WTKS.

CC was passing out 3 year contracts and it seems Daniel wanted to continue unsullied by paper of any length.

Beyond me why they're offering three more years to these guys; the show needs a serious reboot.

daniel was by far the most talented, creative guy on the show........monsters run must be coming to and end.

Bubba The Love Sponge (according to his twitter) is having a meeting with "somebody from his old XL 106.7 days" today that "that I'm super excited about".
Uh-oh.

bubba was at xl in the early 90s, daniel didn't start with real radio - on the ed tyll show until 95 or so and he was very young then? so it can't be him.

I understand your confusion about my statement. I was responding to jazzbo's comment about the monsters being "on the way out", not Daniel. My bad for very little differentiation

why would ANYONE think the Monsters are on the way out, especially when Russ, and Dirty Jim just signed new three-year contracts?

As a fan of the show (and 104.1 in general) I can only really speak from the fan perspective but a lot of fans on the Monsters' Facebook page, on twitter, etc. smell something foul going on behind the scenes. A few months ago, back in the 8/21 show that was just Russ, Daniel, and Drunk, close to the end a caller said that he noticed that it seems like there's some animosity or tension on the show at times which led into Daniel and Russ getting into things and Daniel calling Russ out on generally being passive aggressive, manipulative, a guy who likes to portray himself as always doing the valiant thing because he has to be the good guy in every situation and how things are never HIS fault, etc. Funny enough about this, someone has part of Russ and Savannah's on-air break up on youtube and while the wording isn't the same, in general terms Savannah accuses Russ of the same general things; tweaked a bit because it's more about their personal relationship than a professional one but the same sentiment in the two on-air arguments, years apart at that, can be gleaned.

So then the contract renewals come up and Russ with no hesitation (why should he hesitate considering he's made decent money off of the show?) signs and jets off to England with his wife over the Thanksgiving week they were off. Jimmy signed his contract (no clue when) and I don't know if Drunky had a new one or not but the official story put out by Russ is that Daniel only wanted one year, didn't get it, and left. Daniel's version is that he wanted to be able to just come in and work without a contract nothing about one year and according to Daniel's wife when he wanted to work without a contract CC basically told him not to come back.

The rest of this is getting into the theorizing of fans (fans who are, understandably, upset because of how big and a key part Daniel was to the show) but a lot of them find it awfully convenient that Russ signed then left so he wasn't around when contract negotiation time came and how they feel he should've stepped up to the bat for a guy who's been on the show for 12 years and is a big reason a lot of them found it entertaining. A lot of them are wondering if the podcast Daniel and Drunky do (A Mediocre Time) had anything to do with it and if Russ isn't too happy about them finding success outside of the show. There's the fact that Bubba, Tiff, and others got big sendoffs while Daniel gets 20 minutes at the end of Monday's show with Russ sounding like he couldn't care less. And then there's Daniel himself saying not to trust what Russ is saying on the matter and in his Goodbye video who posted on youtube he specifically thanked Jimmy and Drunky but didn't mention Russ at all.

Basically fans seem to think that Russ made himself scarce at a time where he could've helped out due to pettiness and that the show has problems due to Russ having an ego the size of Texas (which I don't think is a huge leap in logic considering that if Russ likes to talk about anything on the show it's his perfect wife, his vacations, his various houses, his relationships with sponsors or local celebrities, etc.) and that now that it's down to three with seemingly nobody waiting in the wings to fill vacant spots it's only a matter of time until the show slowly slides to its demise. If you've listened at all the last few days Jimmy and Drunky don't sound like their hearts are in it at all and I think that's because the two of them + Daniel had undeniable chemistry (any show with the three of them and no Russ was usually a lot better and more entertaining), plus in Drunky's case him and Daniel are very good friends off the radio so seeing your pal get unceremoniously dumped isn't an easy thing.

With the contracts... this is just my own inferring of things but Russ doesn't see the Monsters as a show but as a brand; he always goes on (on the show) about getting the name out and how basically anything reflects on the show and could potentially bring in new listeners. The Monsters is Russ' gravy train so no way he's going to say no to anything that keeps that train running even if you're leaving bitter feeligns with the talent that got you there. Jimmy has been angling for his own show/hosting gig for a long time and with Philips obviously in the twilight of his career I would guess is sticking around in the hopes that if/when Jim retires he'll be around as a known quantity to swoop into that now open spot... and I wouldn't mind Jimmy taking over for Jim full-time when/if that day comes because I think he's actually a fairly good host (no matter whether or not you like or agree with him) and is able to keep things entertaining and energetic. So a Jimmy/Mo/Jack/Jana show would be a fairly good thing.

Drunky's got AMT with Daniel if things with the Monsters ever go south/continue to.

So yeah, long story short it just seems like there's a lot of simmering tension and behind the scenes drama going on: Tiffany said on her facebook page a few days ago that she was glad Daniel stood his ground, that "a bunch of us" know the truth and that eventually everyone will as well and when they do it'll make people mad. It's all fan theorizing and inferring but it seems like a lot of talent on the show is none too happy with Russ... and neither are the fans. And for fans upset that a guy that had been a big part of the show for a long time to just get dropped with the main host almost seeing it as an afterthought a lot of them think that said tension, drama, and one man's ego is going to do in the show.

Doesn't mean they still have to be on 104.1.....

FH&F and Tom Leykis had just signed new contracts just before CBS killed KLSX in L.A.

Signing a new contract means nothing.
