Danvers explosion--listener commentary on WBZ

Saw huge mushroom cloud explosion at about 2:50 am as I was on Rt 128 north, between Rt 114 and
Endicott St. exits. Heard loud boom--some have said they could hear it 40 miles away. I went home
(could see flames in distance as I drove by Danversport Yacht Club) and tried to get info via TV,
radio, and comp. No local news on TV though Ch 5 had a crawl going: huge explosion possibly a propane
plant in Danvers on Water St

WBZ is getting calls right now from various people in the area and also Carl Stevens is reporting.
Thank God for local content on radio.

All TV news stations are too busy with getting their MassPike, Logan, Amtrak and mall remotes set up.

this was the Danvers community reaction to the YMCA having a fake Tina Turner appear at a fundraiser

KaBoom....

YMCA engages in Tina Turner trickery to raise money for charity

BEVERLY, Mass. -- The party's over for patrons, who thought they had paid to dance with the real Tina Turner at a YMCA charity event on Monday night.

When event organizers introduced the night's "mystery guest," they failed to declare that the diva was actually an impersonator.

Valruven:
This is not a slight, and with all due respect to your experience... do you ever have anything positive to say about a station or anyone? Must you always find people/stations to tear down? I remember you working with Harvey at WCGY and it seems little has changed.
I'm especially curious about your recent vitriol towards admittedly troubled WRKO.

WBZ radio and later local TV (just before 5 am) was the place to turn for updates about this. WESX?
Lo siento. WNSH? Syndie talk. not sure what WBOQ was doing but they prob. had coverage a bit later.
WRKO had Noory and Fox national updates (it WAS the #2 story on the Fox Radio 1 pm 'cast) but this is
called we-are-spending-$20-million-a-year-for-Red-Sox-rights-and-local-news-must suffer.

And imagine if 'BZ radio was doing syndie instead of Steve Leveille taking calls from locals about what was going on...

Varulven has said I'm a good DJ in a past post :)

I just answered this same question yesterday with a listing of a number of great jocks and stations.

WJIB is one of the few independents left, and programming that isn't homogenized.

Problem is, the thin-skinned jocks attack anyone who says anything that isn't glowing. Also, you put people at a disadvantage when you have 5 posts and post anonymously. It's a level playing field if a Paul Marshall spreads lies, then I can correct his b.s. (that I never hired him when I allegedly worked at a sports station? I never worked at a sports station!) - just the art of argument becomes muddy when the playing field is not level. If a Marshall will make things up and keep pounding that inaccurate "memory", while the rest of us work with facts and links and having been there.

That being said, I blame Ed Markey and Bill Clinton, two men I voted for in the past and will vote for in the future, for what I believe is their biggest mistake - The Telecommunications Act of 1996. The radio wolves are just being corporate jerks swallowing up whatever their greedy lips can suck up, we need new safeguards to breed a radio landscape that nurtures independent owners. More jobs will open up, less creativity will be stifled.

Do you have a problem with that? You should thank God and your lucky stars there are guys like me willing to say it the way it is. Radio hates that - which is why so many anonymous jerks swing at me.

The more they swing, the more they prove my points.

I think the "elder" crack was uncalled for. You have no way of knowing what happened during the "big bang" with this site and the "other board" and you have no idea of any former user ID I may have had during the previous incarnation of this board. I noticed you got a new ID about that time too but you're somehow better because you post more?? Sir thy name is vanity. Due to employer policy, I have no choice but to post anonymously....had that occurred to you?
Also, I have attacked no one, including yourself, nor am I spreading BS or called anyone names-but you have decided arbitrairily I am an "anonymous jerk". I won't even bother to follow up on that. I asked a simple question, which you answered the way I expected, which is to say you haven't changed a whit since you rode Harvey's coattails. I doubt you care, but I share your views on the Telecom Act passage. It has indeed changed radio for the worse.

Proof positive you folks don't listen. The much-maligned Shadow news folks had this story on WRKO from the first newscast at 6:20AM and in every one since. That's more local news than WTKK had for sure.

>>>The much-maligned Shadow news folks had this story on WRKO from the first newscast at 6:20AM and in every one since

so what, 'bz won by a mile

well I went to bed at 5:30 am and didn't get up till noon or so (I work nights) so I had no way of knowing that.
I was taking part in a live thread on Free Republic before then & saw the coverage on 4, 5, and 7 as well.

"Explosion in the Distance, Shook My Windows, (North of Salem, MA)
My window | Wednesday, November 22, 2006 | 2:58 am"

by the way nothing against the Shadow folks--I think people are just saying they'd rather a station have
its own news department as WRKO did, instead of going for a "shared" service. (The money that would have
gone to them is heading to Yawkey Way instead...)

As serious as the situation was, LucyLu's WRKO blowing up comment gave me a good laugh LOL ;D

Lucy gets a gold star for her post. & since I don't like her, that's a big compliment indeed. That was funny.

And note to Raccoon - yes you are a good d.j. But 25 years is a long time to be stuck in college radio!
Do some interviews and get 'em published. There's more to life than WMWM! This is not an insult, it is your Dan Kennedy (not the writer, the speaker) motivational thought for the day.

Happy Thanksgiving!
