Danville Market

What's going on in the Danville area now? I lived/worked in Reidsville, NC for several years and am wondering if anything across the line has changed since I've left. I assume that AKG is still Country, BTM Talk and OKD CCM, but don't know who/what's anywhere else. I mention 103.3, 1330 and 91.1, because those are probably the least likely to change. Is MNA (if that's even it's call still) FM still sports? How about their AM? What about HLF? Are they still Mix-rock-type with religious programming on Sunday mornings? Any new stations? I believe I heard somewhere that 970 and 1580 have either gone off or changed, but don't know/remember the particulars. Any info is greatly appreciated.

1330/102.5 is a Classic Hits, as is 1580/104.5. 970/103.7 is classic country.

Yes, all translators. When it comes to FM signals, Danville got the short end of the stick, really, given its proximity to Roanoke, Lynchburg, Greensboro, etc.

Pittsylvania County has only 2 commercial FM licenses, WAKG and WMNA FM.

All others are translators with about 5 miles of coverage.

Pittsylvania County is Virginia's largest county in terms of total square miles.

I think WMNA 730 is still doing country or southern gospel, but not certain. WHLF is still A/C, and co-owned with the former WVOV 970 (now WMPW) and WILA 1580 (now WWDN). They dropped their power a bit a few years back for WKHK in Colonial Heights to improve their facility. WHLF 1400 went dark several years ago but 1400 is alive again as gospel WAJL.

Urban WQOK 97.5, formerly licensed to South Boston but based in Raleigh, changed their COL to Carrboro, NC and moved their antenna from Berea, NC to Durham, dropping their height and their power level about 20,000 watts, so they're no longer heard around Danville.

As mentioned, the two Danville Lakes Media stations are on FM translators (on an antenna by the 3rd Avenue Fire Station), and both market as exclusively FM stations. WWDN/W283BN as classic hits "104-5 The Dan" and WMPW/W279AO as "Classic Country 103.7" (this was originally CHR 103.7 Amp FM until last year). WBTM, which leans more A/C now and has dropped Rush Limbaugh's show (likely due to 94.5 WPTI/Eden), finally added FM W273CD two or three months ago and rebranded as "Big Hits 102.5 and 1330 WBTM" though the "1330" is played down. Raleigh classical station WCPE 89.7 has translator W275AW 102.9 in Danville, and is in the process of getting a full power FM at 88.7 in Milton, NC. The only Danville area AMs without an FM presence are WDVA 1250, WKBY 1080 (Chatham), and WYNC 1540 (Yanceyville)--all three are black gospel formatted.

Semora-licensed 106.7 signed on from Danville in the 1990s as CHR WPXX "Danville Pixx 106.7", and went oldies before being bought by EMF Broadcasting in 2000 and expanding their signal as WKVE, now WKVK, to cover Raleigh, Durham, and Greensboro with the satellite-delivered CCM K-Love format

RadioDaze, thanks for the involved update. So much has changed, mostly depressing, IMHO. I have a friend who voice-tracks/programs for WAJL, so I knew about them. Don't know how they're making it though, heard they only have like one preacher on there. Why in the world would WCPE even have a translator in the Danville area, let alone a full-power station? That's plumb crazy! It's sad to see the AMs played down, especially since I worked for WCLW for several years. Wonder how they're doing now? Every time I've tried to call them, I get no answer. Last time I heard them, which was a few years ago I might add, they were down to only like two announcers, mostly automated. I know Danny Hawkins has a couple of FM rim-shotters to pick up on the IFB (Independent, Fundamental, Baptist) market there, but they're unprofessional to say the least, IMHO. Yeah, I remember when QOK and PXX came on the air and remember the latter's changes, but was unaware of the former.

Why in the world would WCPE even have a translator in the Danville area, let alone a full-power station? That's plumb crazy!

WCPE seems to have a significant amount of listeners and financial supporters in the City by the Dan. Danville seems to maintain a somewhat active fine arts scene for a declingint former mill town with 45,000 or so population. There's the Danville Symphony, several wine tasting events, and the North Theatre (though I think that's closed at the moment).

It is kind of sad about the AMs there, though. Danville seemed to be one place where AM was still viable. WBTM' seemed better than many FMs, but now their music mix seems a bit bland since they added their FM translator. I miss the old WILA 1580, too. That was a well-programmed R&B station. Still great radio in that town, though. I live in Durham, and keep my dial on WAKG most of the time (much, much better programmed than WQDR, the "local" Raleigh country station), and sometimes listen in the car to WBTM at 1330 (when I'm not around the WTIK 1310 transmitter site anyway).

HMMM, interesting about WCPE and the fine arts community. I find both rather out of character, IMHO. Speaking of WAKG, I used to listen to The Saturday Night Country Hall Of Fame, back when Tom Wilson, then Tom and Kenny Rorrer, then Don Carol and Kenny Rorrer did it. LOL! Do they still have Saturday Night Cool Classics where that used to be? IMHO, what a joke, although they used to be well programmed, other than that try at a Classic Country show.

I remember the "Saturday Night Hall of Fame", though I personally much prefer the current "Saturday Night Cool Classics". It has long been appointment listening for me...lots of gems you remember and like but don't hear on other classic country formats or shows, great background on the artists, and lots of listener involvement. I'm not sure, but I think the current show has been on in that slot since about 1999 or 2000. The timeslot shifted from 8-11 to 7-10 last year. I don't remember where it is, but a few years ago I came across audio of the "Saturday Night Hall of Fame" Phil Watlington-voiced show open online. It was very well put together.

It's been a long time since I've heard Cool Classics, but it just seemed thrown together when I did. The HOF had more oldtime/bluegrass type stuff, with gospel thrown in for good measure, with a slew of listener participation. It started out from 6-10, then went to 8-12, then 8-11. BTW, for some reason or other, I'm unable to read what I type, so sorry if this is a mess. LOL!
