Dapper O'Neill dies

Upon reading that former Boston politician Dapper O'Neill passed away, I couldn't help but think back to the days when WBCN used to run a sweep of the cantankerous councillor going "This is Dapper O'Neill and your station sucks!" I also vaguely remember the "Dapper Rap" during Parenteau's show.

Anyone recall what pitted Dapper against 'BCN originally?

Wasn't he JUST in the paper a couple of days ago with a picture from the Retired Boston Policemens Party?

one of a kind. I couldn't be any different from him politically but have respect for how he looked after his constituents. Also, to keep this to radio--I used to get a kick out of his fill-in appearances on the old WHDH and WRKO, I think. He used to be on with Jerry Williams and Jerry would call him "Al." Hmmm... that name has a nice ring to it ;D

The guy was a publicity hound. Hopefully he did a good job for his peeps but he was embarrassing. I saw him on the old Morton Downey show one time and it was painful. Jerry as well: they should have known better.

Remember the "Jody Dowd?" --for Sec.of State-- campaign song (with Dapper and Jody at the piano!)

I don't know much about this guy, but I remember there was this song of his called "Spaghetti Itis." I don't know if it was ever on the radio, but it used to always be on the jukeboxes at Papa Gino's.

Kelly and Dapper was a racist . Thank god , The Old Boston is dying off . Lets not name any bridge ( Kelly ) or any Boys and girls club ( Tom Yawkey boys and Girls Club of Roxbury ) after this racist ( Dapper ) .

Uh oh rapking, you've crossed the line. Ain't nothing gonna save you from the fire that's about to be hurled in your direction. ;D

In Rapkings mind everyone is racist, he and his ilk have overplayed it to the point that no one pays attention anymore.

Yeah and Don Imus is a racist too huh Rappy???

You and (the UNreverands)Al Sharpton and Jessie should just go away.

R.I.P. Dapper (who probably helped someone in your family!)

Dapper and Kelly was the Irish Al Sharpton . I am not a Al or Jesse Fan . All these race problem nuts, can go to hell .

I think Dapper was a miserable lonley guy who just liked to make trouble for the sake of making trouble. Can anyone recall a significant program or piece of legislation he championed. He ran for everything but could never get elected to any office besides the City Council.

I thought the way he campaigned at funeral homes each night visting the wakes of people he didn't know very taky.
It was a cheep way for him to get votes.

Howie Carr regularly makes fun of politicians who like Dapper, still lived with his mother, then sister, never married ( I wonder why he never made a honest woman out of his "girlfriend" of 54 years) never had a checking account or owned a house.

I met him on a few occasions and always thought he looked stupid wearing white socks with a suit.

....and wasn't it priceless, hearing sound bites of people like Ray Flynn talking about how Dapper came from not only the old school of politicians, but the better school? Look in the encyclopedia under "talking dinosaur," you'll see Raybo's photo.

Dapper was less than kind to many people, he was one of the more outspoken critics of forced busing during that horrible era - yet he used to poll extremely well in so-called minority neighborhoods. Go figure.
