Darren McGavin's "NightStalker" series, to me, was the direct ancestor of "The X-Files" and was the direct descendant of "The Outer Limits" and, to a lesser extent, "The Twilight Zone".
Newspaper reporter Kolchak's brushes with various creatures and spirits in and around Chicago on a series that was shot mostly at night was really scary TV. McGavin's persona fit perfectly within that series.
Thanks, Darren, for TV that scared the heck out of an impressionable 4-year-old who would watch "NightStalker" and then try to get to sleep. I STILL can remember scenes from that show! Brrr!
