DAT to Digital Conversion??? Any suggestions would help...

So I have TONS of old DAT tapes that I would love to get converted to digital media (interviews, air-checks, phone calls, etc.. ). I DO have a big old DAT machine that's eaten every tape I've ever put in it. I'm not currently with a radio station so I don't have access to all sorts of equipment.

So my question is, is there a service out there that converts DAT tapes to digital? Like if I send them all my tapes, in two weeks they send me a flash drive with all my audio? I'd gladly pay a fee for something like that.

Or should I just try and find someone to clean up/fix my old DAT player so it doesn't eat my tapes?

Thx for any suggestions...

DAT >IS< digital :) (sorry)

I've got 3 working DAT machines...all top of the heap Sony's.

But your problem may be related to alignment of the recording machine. DAT recorders were finicky to say the least. If something was just even slightly out of whack concerning the tape path and guides you could not play the tape on a different machine. Hate to say it but those Panasonic 3700 and 3900 machines were notorious for that problem IMHO.

When those mechanical problems happen they only get worse as time goes by and that's why your tapes are getting consumed in the deck.

I've got an otherwise perfectly good Fostex DAT with tape path issues that is waiting for the dumpster. No parts available and no one wants to fix it.
And worse, I've got the Sony version of the multitrack DA-88 with the same issues. It'll cost me more to repair it that it's worth, with no guarantee how long it will function after I invest the time and dollars in repairing it. Both machines were more than $4K new.

Good luck on your search, there are companies that do that kind of stuff but it's expensive. Do a google search for a firm called "Mr. Toad's Audio."
