DATA OVER AUDIO

I have a question for you folks that have been there and done that:

I have a need to run data between two buildings that are around 100 ft apart. The buildings are connected by a 9-pair, shielded instrumentation cable in conduit. The 9-pair are twisted and individually shielded. Can I successfully use two pair to connect to a data hub and extend a LAN from one building to the other? Pulling CAT-5 through the conduit is not an option.

You will probably end up doing a temporary hook-up to see if it works. What the text book says will work and won't work.... are sometimes proven wrong when you just give it a try.

I have done this a few times and have had good results. Sometimes I cannot get a 100 meg connection as I normally would if I were using Cat5 cable. I connected to a switch that would fall back to a 10 meg connection if the 100 meg would not work. How good a connection you get will depend on the type wire being used and several other things. Give it a try, As GOAT said the book ain't always right.

Several companies make LAN extenders which work over a single twisted pair...it's kind of like a mini private DSL circuit. I'm using a pair made by Star-Tech that are connected to 50-year-old 25-pair cables in an old bank building where it would have been cost-prohibitive to pull a CAT6 cable between the first floor and the basement (studio built over the boiler room, possible asbestos, you get the idea).

I tried using the 9 pair shielded cable and the data rate was so bad it was not workable. One of the things that may have contributed to the problem is the proximity to a 2.5 kw AM and and a 100 kw AM less than a mile away. So, I have ordered shielded CAT-6 and we have an electrician lined up to pull two runs of it between the buildings. Thanks to those who replied and offered advice.
