It is hard to believe that next month will mark the 25th anniversary of the death of John Lennon.
November 18th two hour NBC “Dateline” story about Lennon, and his killer Mark Chapman, brought back so many memories of that horrible day when a little nobody with a gun ended the life of someone who was one of the giants in the field of music.
There has been a great deal of speculation over the past 25 years whether Lennon, and the other former Beatles, would have reunited for a fund-raising concert, or at least appeared together. I believe that had he lived, Lennon most certainly would have appeared at the concert honoring the late George Harrison, since both of them were very close.
Would the release of his album “Imagine” reinvigorated Lennon’s career?
Those questions of course are a moot point now.
Without the song-writing abilities of Lennon, McCartney and to a point George Harrison, the Beatles would have been just another rock-and-roll band. Their willingness to change their style of music from “She Loves You” to Sgt Pepper’s, is what makes the Beatles so unique. Unlike many bands of the 60s and 70s, the Beatles were willing to grow, even if it meant alienating their core audience.
I don’t believe that Yoko Ono or Linda Eastman-McCartney were the reasons for the breakup of the Beatles. After so many years together the boys had done everything they set out to accomplish and decided it was time to move on with their own lives and careers.
From a personal observation I must admit that when the band broke up I thought that McCartney was the brains behind the lyrics of the Beatles songs. It wasn’t until years later that I realized that the true genius was Lennon.
