Dave Archer and DAVE-FM

Things Dave Archer can't say during Falcons games:

Vick claws his way to a first down.
That Vick is a scrappy fighter.
It's a dog fight down there on the offensive line.
What counts is not necessarily the size of the dog in the fight - it's the size of the fight in the dog.
Horn ran a little dog leg pattern.

Songs no longer being played on DAVE-FM, the flagship radio station of the Falcons:
Who Let the Dogs Out
Hound Dog
Black Dog
Atomic Dog
Me and You and a Dog Named Boo
Walking the Dog
Mandy
Any thing by Three Dog Night
Any thing by Snoop Dog

Go on, add your own to either list.

No dogs were harmed during this post

In all seriousness, the only thing worse than this whole Vick indictment thing is how lame the Falcons Radio Network is run. CBS has no clue. Hopefully they'll improve this train wreck when the Dave FM rights deal ends (mercifully) after this coming season. Durham and Archer are fine...Rick Caffey who runs CBS Radio Atlanta is beyond clueless.....he might even be brainless.

How is the Falcons being a losing franchise Rick Caffey's fault?
The Falcons broadcasts on DAVE made mucho money for "The Eye".....hard to call that "brainless."
If the speculation is correct about Falcons going to Cox next year, let's see how BoyBob does with it.....adding a couple of teddy bears to the broadcast can only help.....

Right, he's real clueless. He also runs a small station called V-103 which, last time I heard, has been in first place since the beginning of time and bills about a jillion dollars a year. FYI, Caffey is widely regarded as one of the top GM's in Atlanta. The Falcons problems start with the team, not their radio partner. Oh, and just to enlighten you, radio partners of pro sports teams RARELY have much say in how the broadcasts are run, who the on-air talent is, how the game is aired, etc. The teams usually control most, if not all of that.

Want examples? Dave FM does a terrible job of promoting the Falcons games. They are just another rock station with ratings in the toilet. The Falcons and NFL brand are powerful brands, yet they promote themselves almost solely as a rock station. On numerous billboards in Atlanta, no mention of the Falcons games when in truth that is the only thing they air that would set them apart from being just another rock station. As for V103, how hard is it to make an urban station #1 in a market like Atlanta? Rick Caffey is a product of the sales side of the business, not the programming side. Credit for V103 really should go more to Reggie Rouse. But back to Dave...the Falcons aren't happy with the way the games are presented or the broadcasts promoted. Hopefully the new flagship will have a better grasp of the power of the brand. "Home of the Falcons" is a heck of a lot better marketing strategy than "Rock without rules". They ought to call it "Rock without ratings". Hopefully Mike Wheeler can turn around the mess he inherits. Michelle Engel was overmatched.

It has been a little tough for DAVE to market the Dirty "Jail" Birds this year. It's like marketing Barry Bonds or Rosie O'Donnell. When you think of the Falcons what's the first thing you think of: a football team on the precipice of a Super Bowl? Or one that fired it's coach (Mora) last year because he was a failure and admitted on radio that he wanted to coach elsewhere, had it's most well-liked player (Kearney) leave, traded the QB (Schwab) everyone wanted to be a starter, hired an college coach (Petrino) with no pro experience who wants to get a more pass-oriented offense even though the starting QB is a pure runner and speaking of "Ookie" he has more problems than a family of 15 in a one room apartment?

If I were DAVE, I would be unhappy with the product I was sold. Five years ago DAVE thought they had a Super Bowl winning team, four years later, they have an expansion team with lots of problems. I am in marketing and I would not want to handle the Falcons. There is little positive to emphasis; bad team, bad radio outlet with no ratings and no potential of a good season for the next few years. CBS should ask for their money back.

But Neil, I'm sure these are all problems you can address when you're finally crowned PD at Dave...

Wait. They have to know about you first, right?
