Dave Brown - 30 years at TV5

Yeah Dave Brown! Let me add my name to the list of MILLIONS of people that depend on DAVE! I remember the first time I saw Dave on TV. I was at my Grandparent's house in Potts Camp, MS. My Grandma and Grandpa NEVER went to bed without checking out Dave Browns forecast! Congrats Dave! LOL I STILL count on DAVE! ;)

Watching his style I can tell he's been here since the beginning of tv. [EDIT]. Seems like every single news story and weather forecast is BREAKING NEWS!!! Get real! ::)

[EDIT-vulgar content]

When Dave Brown left WHBQ-13 in the mid 1970s, they had the #1 rated news shows in the Memphis area. After Dave followed Studio Wrestling to WMC-5, they, to my knowledge, have not gotten close to #1 again, even when Jerry Tate had a short stint on Highland.

My late father in NE Arkansas would come down to see me, turn OFF the Weather Channel and turn ON Dave to see his forecast.

He is the ultimate weather icon for the Mid-South.

Dave Brown is the best! Hats off to an extraordinary broadcaster that has stood the test of time and still keeps ticking!

Congrats to Dave for long years before the unblinking eye. I just wish he'd watched Jerry Lawler a little closer when he was sitting next to Lance all those years ago. Perhaps he wouldn't have caught that shiner that Channel 13 viewer gave him on camera one memorable night! Sorry that guy took his weathercasting so seriously. He should have saved that outburst till the modern day when weather guys race to take over normal programming when any cloud comes by.

BTW, do the tv stations have Weatherhouses like cities have Firehouses with a brass pole and striped suits standing by their beds and slip-on Hushpuppies waiting at the base of the pole?

I had the pleasure of working with Dave for the last couple of years at WMC when I went over to TV for a bit. A real pro and a nice guy. I was in the weather office the day of the Germantown tornado. He called it, went on the air with it, and probably saved a few lives. TV weather is hugely important nowdays, especially with the 'local' radio stations running a canned forecast from a deserted studio.

Like tonight, for instance...

Allan, I believe Dave told me once that the story of the guy punching him on the air was an "old wives tell". That seems to be a story that took on a life of it's own. As ffor the remarks by Cappi earlier in the thread....I thought the job of local tv and radio was to serve the community...Thus, if threating weather is in the viewing area or listening area (not just the metro), and Dave leaves his Lakeland palace and drives to midtown to report and predict then he is doing his job and I along with many others can appreciate that dedication. Thanks to Dave for his friendship and dedication and happy anniversary!!

Re: Dave and the WHBQ angry fan story:

Like the reporter said at the end of "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance":

"This is the west, sir. When the legend becomes fact, print the legend."

I had the pleasure of working with Dave on Highland and on Union. Dave was also a jock on 56 back in the Drake (Bill, not "and Zeke") days. I think someone posted an aircheck of him on reelradio.
Dave told me once about being on the air at WHBQ, and getting a call asking him to stay over and cover for George Klein. What made GK tardy was the fact that he had been summoned to Graceland so Elvis could give him a Cadillac. Took a bit of explaining to the RKO suits, since the gift limit was about $20.
Dave is one of the genuine nice guys in the business!

Oh yes, I do remember listening to brother Dave Brown on 56 WHBQ in the late 60's on the black transistor radio strapped to my bike. That was back in the Skip Wilkerson, John Froland, and Jack Parnell era, not to mention the Geaker in your Speaker. Seems like Dave did the 9am to noon shift, or at least that's what I remember.

Congrats, Dave, on such a long and successful radio and television career!

My first memory of Dave Brown was watching "Dialing for Dollars" on WHBQ-TV in the early 70's.

For those not from here, this was a mid-morning "B" movie broadcast. During the commercials, Dave would open the Memphis telephone book at random and select a phone number. If he called your number, you answered the phone, and you answered the "Question of the Day", you'd win the money in the progressive pot.

Those were the days of stay-at-home moms, Captain Kangaroo, and The Electric Company. Boy, what our kids missed out on....

Joe Dyer also hosted "Dialing for Dollars" for a brief time. Dave is truly one of the good guys in this business. Dave will tell you that he owes a large dept of gratitude to Lance Russell who urged him to accept the job as co-host of studio wrestling.

Dave Brown is an icon. Wonder how many more years he plans to be in broadcasting?
