Dave Chamberlain

From this morning's Tom Taylor newsletter:

Dave Chamberlain, co-founder of Arizona’s Skyview Traffic service in 1985 and later co-founder of two other broadcast-related companies, died Monday at 57. Ken Thiele says “Dave was a very special man. I’m proud that I have been able to call him my business partner and my friend for the last 30 years.” Skyview recognizes him “a magnetic personality and longtime figure in the Arizona radio community” Chamberlain went on to help establish Arizona News Radio/California Headline News, then Skyview Networks. Memorial services are Saturday, May 5 at Hansen Mortuaries in Scottsdale.

Sad news indeed. When Metro came to town they got a few affiliates, but didn't really get a foothold in the market till they merged with Skyview. Many traffic companies could learn a lot from the professionalism and success of Skyview. Fortunately, after the merger most Metro employees stayed and the merged company was better than what came before.
R.I.P., Dave.

Stations didn't drop Skyview for two reasons:

1. Dave went around and locked stations in with contracts when he learned that Metro wanted to come to town
2. Dave & company took good care of the stations. Everyone at Skyview did great work from the top on down.

Metro couldn't beat them, so their only choice was to buy them. Those were the days...
