Dave Collins Out At Magic

I'm don't live in Florida but read about the departure of Collins recently. Anybody know what this might mean for Magic? Dave Collins had been doing mornings there for 10 years. The official explanation was the standard "going in a different direction" line. What direction? Softer AC? More contemporary? Something completely different? Or simply, just a lot more music in the morning. Any thoughts?

WMGF has gotten very aggressive for an AC in the last year.

So has just about every other A/C station cheap channel owns. They are a far cry from their "soft and easy favorites" days. Another person posted that Dave had worked at WMGF for ten years. There's your answer, cheap channel does not want to pay his salery when they could get someone from a smaller market to do it for alot less.

What you have accused Clear Channel of, is clearly what the smaller wanna be company's have done, and continue to do. Clear Channel has shown loyalty to morning shows who produce for them. Some of those folks right here in Florida, are older and make even more money collectively than Mr. Collins. There's more to this story than you know.

Cap'n:

With all due respect, I'm trying to make sense of your post, here.

The fact that other older talent make "collectively" more money than Collins, doesn't support what you are saying. That would mean all of the "older folks" together make more than Dave...which really shouldn't surprise anyone (and doesn't show that Collins earns to much).

Additionally, "there's more to the story"...of course! But are you trying to say, "I know something you don't know!" What's the point? I'm sure there's plenty that we (including you) "don't know"...

and so?

I was responding to FrankF's comments that CC didn't want to pay his salary when they could bring in someone from a smaller market for less. My "collective" point was that if salary was the key, why wouldn't they replace two players with smaller market jocks, if the bottom line was $$$$$.
And you are right, I don't know the rest of the story (respect to the late Paul Harvey) either. I was saying that the "cheap" label belongs to smaller wanna be companies who do cut good air talent just to pay a smaller salary.

Also Out...at Warm98 Cincinnati Dean Miuccio: “Hi to all my friends! I want to let you know that WARM 98 just fired me.” The Cincinnati Enquirer says “his profile has been removed from the Warm 98 website”, and says the station will “go to ‘more music in the morning.’”

Dave came to Magic when Dean left for Warm.

If the issue for letting go of Bob was money then would a return of Dean to Magic mean he has a smaller price tag? I'm just wondering out loud about the motives of CC and a replacement at Magic. If Dean was given the heave ho from a CC station in Cincy (probably a money issue) then why hire him to replace Collins who was tossed out (probably a money issue)? Not that the decisions of CC (or most radio corps) always make sense to us out in the real world anyway.

I believe WARM 98 is a Cumulus station.

Oops. Thanks for the correction. I guess there goes my theory.

You are probably correct about the PPM data. But couldn't Dave Collins have handled a "More Music Morning Show"? Being flexible and employed is often a better choice (if they give you one) than remaining true to your "style" or "brand" and unemployment. I don't know Dave and he might not have been given a choice to stay with a new direction for the morning show.

Dave could have handled it. But cheap channel couldn't handle paying him to do it. The same goes for the other radio monolopys too. If they could, all of their music stations would be just automated jukeboxes with just segues & sweepers 24/7. Think of the money they could save without having a live body in the studio, ever. Who cares about serving the public interest, just run the same show on all of your cluster stations Sunday morning or night. As long as the EAS system works, who cares. And the suits wonder why terrestrial radio listenership is down.

Any word on Dave's replacement yet? Or do you think they will stick with the morning show "as is"?

I understand locals are interviewing and holding some tryouts. They better hurry before corporate shove-downs come in the wake of September's PPMs.
