Dave FM - Out of touch with its listeners

According to our intrepid AJC radio reporter, Rodney Ho, the gender breakdown for Dave FM listeners is as follows: 59.9% male (59.1% in 2005, 53.6% in 2004). Why then is DAVE playing so many female friendly artists when the station's listeners are clearly 60% male?

C'mon Neil, can you back that up? You damn skippy I can. Here are the artists that DAVE-FM has played in the last hour: U2, REM, The Cult, Matchbox 20, John Mayer, Elvis Costello, Pink Floyd, INXS, Peter Gabriel, Coldplay and Gomez. For the most part, those artists are on the mellow side. Most of them are considered fairly good-looking (Bono, Rob Thomas, Mayer and Michael Hutchens) which means, the ladies will like it. Clearly these artists attract female listeners. Too bad 60% of the audience is male and for some unknown reason puts up with the likes of Coldplay in order to get to Elvis or Floyd (it should be noted, the songs Dave played by those artist were mellow.)

I know what you are saying, PD Michelle Engle and MD Margot Smith are programming those artists to attract female listeners away from such male-centric stations as Project 96.1, 99X and The River. That is a valid point. Look at the numbers for female listeners who have left DAVE-FM over the past few years. It's getting to be a sausage factory at 92.9 yet Michelle and Margot are still hitting us with touchy feely artists. Ladies, you are not reading your data well.

Lest you think all I do is criticize, I will offer some ways to remedy this situation.
1) Sack Michelle Engle. She clearly has no idea what she is doing. She keeps attempting to go female and all she gets are males. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over but expecting different results.
2) Lose most of the softer music and move towards a blend of harder edged new and classic music. Add: The Shins, Decemberists, Tom Waits, Sloan, Kaiser Chiefs and The Libertines. Axe: John Mayer, Coldplay, Jake Johnson, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Ben Harper and Guster.
3) Get a freaking morning show already! There are at least 10 decent ex-jocks looking for work. Have open auditions, how about Jimmy Baron and Kimmer or Tom Hughes and Larry Wachs or Panda and Moby or Chris Colandro and me for a week! Why not?
4) Advertise already! When was the last time anyone saw a commercial for DAVE-FM? Rule number 10 of advertising, if you don't advertise, no one knows you are there.
5) Get out in the community and spread the word. Except for Mara Davis, you never hear of anyone from DAVE being involved with anything. Two months ago they had that horrible call to auction. Why hasn't Sully picked up a hammer? Can't Margot move a 2x4 somewhere? Is Holly so busy that she can't measure twice and cut once?

Those are my suggestions. I still think it can be fixed.

Flame away!

Maybe they're after the "metrosexual" demo? And I think I'm actually only half kidding here.

Maybe that's what they're tapping (albeit almost certainly unintentionally). It could account for the male skew being generated by a female skewing playlist.

Even with the CBS radio Brinks truck in the parking lot, I bet they're waiting until most of Barnes' remaining contract is amortized before they go nuts on a new local morning show. They probably havent made a decision on Holly, or vice-versa. And you're 100% correct on marketing: CBS owns a lot of the outdoor signage in town and you STILL never see a Dave placard anywhere. White flags everywhere, which is a shame, b/c from 9a to midnight, they sound really good.

Clearly you have a fixation on using the word "clearly".

YES

No. Go softer. Think "Fresh" (WWFS/old WNEW 102.7 in New York). Fresh is a new currents-intensive AC format. Having a station like that would be a great alternative to B98.5's research-heavy format.

Hey Neil,

I'm sure Sully can pick up a hammer, Margot can move a 2X4 and etc. With a Program Director out on maternity leave, I'm sure charitable activities that have to be approved by management have been put on the backburner. Sully is out constantly making public appearences for Dave.

Dear God, no. We do NOT need that type of format here. We need the two stations currently playing good music, 99X and Dave FM. While I prefer the former, I do enjoy Dave at night.

The problem is they THINK they are a true heritage AAA - but you can't just BE one, you have to BECOME one. Theee "I'm hipper than you" attitude is fine when you've established yourself, but they aren't even close. The Imaging... horrible. Which is it "Music Matters or Music Matters HERE"? And for god sake NO ONE needs trivia and music facts constantly - they want music. I wanna shoot myself when I hear Margot - ugggh.

... and CBS, HELLO!!?? - put the Falcons on a station that actually makes sense with football - V103!! It would be HUGE!!

The original post made some excellent point, I thought. The music is completely out of balance gender-wise and they MUST get a morning show. They have virtually nothing on during the the heaviest listened-to time period of the day. However, I'm confused by the suggestions that Kimmer or Tom Hughes would be right for the station. I'm going to assume that was meant as a joke as it's so insane. On the other hand Jimmy, Larry, Eric, Wally, Calandro, or some combination of them would be no-brainers. Anyone want to speculate on which of them might sound good together (keeping in mind that Larry and Eric is not an option anymore)?

That post doesn't make sense. It's like saying " Choose your date for tonight. Your choices are Denise Richards, Rebecca Gaygeart, Rosie O Donell and Dakota Fanning. But Denise and Rebecca are busy!" ;)

As much as I hate to admit it, maybe Opie and Anthony would be best for Dave FM. It's already CBS, so it's free, and it would skew more 'male' in AM drive.

CBS will never flip the format. Dave is in the same position Z93 was in during the late 90s; it's positioned with a powerhouse money-maker, and so long as Dave generates revenue (which it does, due to the buyers apparently), they won't flip it.

As for O&A in the morning; why bother? They'd never be a huge ratings "get" and they'd lose advertisers.

This is one of the most illogical posts I've ever read. If Dave FM is playing such a female friendly playlist then they wouldn't be 60% male. Your perceptions of those artists are obviously wrong because the facts reveal that those artists appeal to men 60/40 over women. Another definition of insanity is to believe your own conceptions when the facts clearly show them to be misconceptions. Dave-FM has succeeded in attracting a 60% male audience with the current mix, so shifting because of Neil misconceptions about the female friendly nature of the bands would be absurd.

Bring back Z-93 and classic rock!

Yeah, that's not a bad point either but it still doesn't resolve the problem that we all can agree on...mornings. Of the names mentioned, O&A aren't gonna happen...way TOO male and are having trouble in the markets they're already in. Wally and Calandro...uh, no. Larry...eh, maybe but his strong lean to the right might be a bit OTP for Dave's P1's. Eric...probably better than Larry in this scenario (not as extreme and surely more management-friendly). Jimmy...could be a good choice as most of Dave's listeners grew up with 99X during the Morning X's heyday. Am I missing anyone?

You do realize there are cars and planes right, lol. Why are we talking about the same retreads over and over. Enough with these washed up names, Dave already made that mistake once. Bring in some fresh blood from out of market already.

In a perfect world you'd be right. The problem with bringing in "fresh blood" with Dave is that it takes a solid year for fresh blood to get any traction in a market, and companies today aren't giving shows that kind of time. If you can't show life in 2 or 3 books - which an unknown wouldn't - they panic. At this point Dave is better off with some familiarity it would seem.
