Dave FM to Flip to All News

It was announced this morning that WZGC-FM/92.9 will flip to All-News on May 1. WPB1999 has been named News Director of the operation.

CBS Radio President Dan Mason commented, "We are very excited to bring All-News to the Atlanta market. It's a format that's been sorely missing from the Atlanta radio dial for a long time. And we were very fortunate to lure WPB1999. He has a depth of experience in the format, having been an intern at WINS in New York 30 years ago."

Posters on the Atlanta Radio-Info board had mixed reaction to the announcement. One regular poster, Gregg75, said, "While I'm glad that CBS Radio recognized the need for change, I feel that the market has much more of a need for a station that plays the 80's."

Vaulted voice professional Jeff Laurence, who sometimes posts on the Atlanta board, commented, "CBS Radio should be congratulated for bringing this exciting format to Atlanta. However, my favorite station will remain WGUN."

I just got a call from them and I am excited about "All News WZGC 92.9". I think a no-nonsense style reporting without the slant of WGST and WSB.

HAF!

April Fool or not, they need to throw in the towel. Such a sorry effort and being okay with the status quo.

Fire everyone for too much complacency, and not maximizing revenue.

Such a shame that no one in Atlanta can be a significant leader in the Rock format. It's like no one even tries anymore.

@Roddy: If you really wanted your April Fool's press release on 92.9 to have a large amount of credibility, you should have made at least two references to future 92.9 program director Neil Millman. ::)

Not sure why everyone's wanting Dave to flip, but they're fine with Rock 100.5 (whose ratings are even lower) ???

The subject is not what the station is (supposedly) flipping FROM; it's what it is (supposedly) flipping TO ... and the strength of CBS news makes the whole thing believable - perfect for April 1st.
::)

Dave has been playing some interesting music lately...this morning they were playing "Magneto & Titanium Man" by Paul McCartney & Wings. A very deep cut off of 1975's "Venus & Mars". Never heard that song on the radio before...

Then again, River played Quiet Riot's "*** On Feel The Noize" the other day, too. The classic rock format must be suffering from lots of third-degree burns for them to dig that deep.

That wasn't the implication of the post I quoted - it called Dave FM a "sorry effort" and urged them to "throw in the towel"

atlantaboy, I guess you missed the threads a few months ago where people were lambasting Rock 100.5 for their horrid numbers and various experiments with Active Rock and TRG.

I much prefer Dave over WNNX and would be really sad to see the former go, but honestly I think both stations are hosed at this point.

Isnt it funny that up until about 2 months ago, we thought that WZGC would be the one to flip to the all-news. Who would have thought that an okay oldies station w/ Randy and Spiff would go to a 24/7 news format. It is amazing how this business changes so fast.

This evening, I had my MP3 player on at the gym and turned to Dave FM. They were playing "Soldier Boy" by The Shirelles. I immediately jumped up thinking they had switched formats to Oldies, as discussed on here numerous times. I kept on listening hoping to hear the new name of the station. While the song was playing, I was thinking, "Man, they sure are going back in their library. This station is gonna veer really old. That song has to be from the early 1960s."

It was Margot doing her "Dave After Tomorrow" show, highlighting songs about soldiers for Memorial Day weekend.
.

This has got to be a very late April Fool's joke. Another all-news station? If it isn't, then SWEET! Now WSB, WGST, WGKA, and WCFO are about to get a run for their money (and ratings)!

It originally was.

Bummer....wait a minute. "It originally was"? But now it isn't? I'm confused.

Back on April 1st, Roddy made this to make fun of me, and the rest of people who speculated that WZGC would go all news. But, my point is: no one would have ever guessed WYAY would be the one to switch formats from Classic Hits- to ALL NEWS 106.7.

So it was a joke, only fate has the last laugh!

I didn't do it to make fun of you. I usually post something for April Fools. This had been discussed so I thought it would be a fun joke.

But, who knew? I don't think Cumulus knew at the time.

It sounds like Dave is up to it again...Jimmy Buffet and the Beastie Boys today. Random, but pretty good. Now, if they would just stick with it their numbers might improve. Time will tell. Happy Memorial Day everyone.
