Dave Kane - full show circa 2000

Hi all,

Back in the early 2000s I was a big fan of Dave Kane and used to record his show on WPRO. I later discovered that he moved to WNRI in 2005 and began recording him there too. I have a large collection of his full shows in MP3 format, from 2000-2009. I uploaded one of the oldest I have to YouTube. From May 13 2000, here is a full episode of "Kane and Company":

If anyone is interested in hearing more, let me know.

I was his call screener for a total of about 2 years while he was at WPRO in the early 2000s. He would refer to me as "Rick Shaw" (a last name he just made up), if you ever hear that in your old airchecks.

He was also on WSAR for awhile in the 10-Noon slot or maybe 10-13 but I forget which year(s). It must've been 2003-2005. He did a show for seniors @ WPRO in 2005-6 which I remember hearing promos.

Dave Kane's act was already "old hat" by the time he made it to WPRO and, to me anyway, his schtick was already stale...

Us old folks remember that Kane toiled away most of the 1980's, and a little of the 1990's....at the now-defunct 1320-WARA...in the days before the power increase to 5KW.

Only my opinion, of course...but I always saw Kane as a sort of left-wing pale immitation of Steve White.....forever looking for the next controversy...or the next "cause" or charity to latch onto. The ending segment of "Kane & Co."...which he called "Ta-Ta's"...is a direct ripoff of White's "Crazy Time"...which ended the show with a series of short "drive-by" comments from callers.

Hey Rick, sure I remember you! Dave definitely mentions you in some of the old shows I have. I even remember he talked to you on-mic a few times. If I come across any times you were on the air, I'll be sure to post them for you. Hope you've been well in the last 12 years. Did you end up continuing in radio?

Is this the same Crazy Time that DePetro currently does @ 11:57 Friday mornings? Then again, I guess White isn't around to complain.

Radio is like TV. Everyone steals from each other. In my opinion it's not who does it first that counts. It's who is the funniest while doing it. So my vote would have to go to Steve White. Hard not to laugh when he called everyone an old bag jew bastard.

So true!....Radio in this market had never heard the likes of someone like White before....OR since.

I always had the feeling that White had "borrowed" certain elements from the likes of Imus and Stern....and tailored them specifically to fit for a Rhode Island audience.

I remember he talked with me on mic about a Colorgenics website, which is a personality test based on colors. WPRO was my first paid job in radio. I previously interned out of high school at Fun 107 for promotions in 1996 and for Mike Butts on 92 Pro FM in 1997.

My first on-air job in radio was weekends at Fun 107 from 2002-2004. From 2003-2004 I did weekends at 104.5 XLO in Worcester including fill-in for the Awesome '80s on Saturday nights, afternoon drive then evenings on WORC-FM Oldies 98.9 and I eventually became the Assistant Program Director and Creative Services Director for those two stations. From 2004-2007, I got out of radio and worked full-time at Comcast. Then I got back into radio 2007-2008 doing weekends at Lite Rock 105 and producing again at WPRO. Since the end of 2008 when I moved to St. Petersburg, FL briefly, I've been out of radio again. I am a driving instructor for a local driving school at the moment. I was also the moderator here at radio-info.com for the Providence board in the early 2000s until new management took over.

Thanks for asking! I am not through with radio. I shall return in some form in the future if the right opportunity arises. And sure, send me any airchecks you have that are interesting. I enjoy collecting them.

I'd be interested in hearing ALL of your Dave Kane recordings... I collect audio recordings and grew up listening to Dave Kane on WBSM in Fairhaven. As teenagers we'd try and prank call his show - years later I found him on the radio in Rhode Island and I called him up and pranked him a few more times... I understand the criticism or having a critical idea but what is done is done so to dress it as something that coudn't be fun or entertaining would be to reduce the possibilty of objective listening for those who've never heard him - he was wide open to negative criticism while he was on the air and any comparisons to White or any other radio personality who used or uses a certain format still has to have a personality and be able to make the most out of calls. That's the gig. Would be unfair to compare the two, I think. I doubt that White invented fast calls at the end of a show - I'd imagine that something like that probably happened by accident because someone was runnng out of air time...Anywaay - I'd love to get or hear some of your recordings if not all of them - DropBox or something else? Let me know! Thanks for saving those programs!!! I have a bunch of digital recordings of radio from 2004-2012 if you're looking for anything (mostly Boston/Providence/Cape Cod area stations) and some random recordings made of different channels around the internet that caught my fancy. Would be open to exchanging anything I've got that you might like for any Dave Kane or other local radio recordings you've got.

I am actually just checking this thread for the first time since 2012. On the very very small chance that you see this message, email me at [email protected]. I would love to trade shows with you.

By the way, the YouTube link in the first post no longer works (the account got suspended due to copyright) but I have just created a new channel where I will be posting old Dave Kane shows which can be found here:
