Dave MacNeill

Dave MacNeill, long time voice of WCRB at 1330, 102.5, and 99.5 on the dial, has died. Dave joined WCRB in 1950, when it was on AM 1330 and still played popular music, and spent most of his career there, as announcer, news director, vice-president and station manager. Dave hosted the weekly Boston Symphony and Boston Pops broadcasts on WCRB for more than a decade in the 1990's and 2000's. He was also a master interviewer whose conversations with prominent musicians, artists, actors, politicians, and others often graced the WCRB airwaves.

When he retired in 2009, Dave was the longest serving announcer on Boston radio.

I met him once, but from what i hear he was an absolute prince who took being sent to the back of the bus during the Mazza Top 40 Classical days with grace and dignity that the people who ruined WCRB by making it into Top 40 Classical could never understand.

Dave also hosted several ethnic programs on WCRB over the years. One that was close to my own heart aired Sunday mornings at 9:30 for many years called the Armenian Culture Program. He would introduce us to music by Armenian composers and performers and his pronounciation of their names and titles was always perfect. It was a sad day for the Armenians of Greater Boston when that program went off the air back in the 1980s.

Spotlight on Latvia! "A land and people by the Baltic Sea, striving to be free!"

As I recall both it and the Armenian program were brokered shows; the Latvian one was sponsored by the Latvian Heritage Foundation.

Correct. The Armenian Culture Program was sponsored by "Friends of Armenian Culture Society (FACS)", as was Armenian Echoes, which ran directly after it, which was hosted by Dave Tucker.
