DAVE MARCUM PASSES AWAY

Just heard that long-time DFW radio pro Dave Marcum died over the weekend from cancer. I think the funeral is going to be Wednesday at 3pm at First Presbyterian in Dallas but I'm not sure. Dave was a pro's pro; I'm shocked & saddened by his death.

Dittos. Another damn good talent/programmer who had difficulty in finding a decent gig in recent years.

Dave told me he had just started doing a weekday morning Country shift for ABC Networks when he got his diagnosis. They kept the position open for him as he underwent his treatments. He was cancer-free when the treatment ended, but it left his immune system in tatters. Pneumonia took him.
Mr. Marcum was a pistol in his early years. He achieved a lot in his broadcasting career, including a spectacular success for KVET-FM just a few years back.
Everyone there speaks very highly of him. In fact, I have never heard an unfavorable report about the man.
He leaves behind his young bride and a toddler daughter. Prayers are in order.

Isn't this the guy who was on the 990 morning show at the end when they tried to go live and local? I know that I remember hearing his name on the station quite a bit during Kevin's show.

That would be him. Dave was Vice President for Programming. He hosted the morning show with Jerry, Kate and Bob. Doc was the operator. Dan lewis produced for a time.

Damn! And he seemed fine and full of energy just a short time ago. Was this a sudden thing or had he been fighting it for a while?

Dave fell ill about the 7th of November, and did his last show on Real Country the next day. I wish I had been rolling tape. :(

What is really sad is that the other DJs can't really talk about it because the listeners probably didn't know Dave. I don't know of many RC affiliates that don't produce their own morning show.

Rest in Peace, Dave.

I just found out yesterday late in the afternoon that Marcum was gone. I met him for the first time over at 990AM, but you could tell by the way he carried himself, and the pipes that he had, he was old school radio.

We did the Morning show over there on KMSR/KFCD back in 2004. It was fun. I was pulling audio last night from archives, and listening to him. He was a mic hog, but he was funny! He followed the classic three B's of radio that no one remembers anymore. (B)e Funny, (B)e Entertaining, or (B)e quite. There was some good laughs and good times in the halls of 990. He was great to learn from, he will be missed by many close and far.

I'm making my way to town tonight for the services, if I see you out there, don't be a stranger. There's going to be lots of stories to tell and hear. The services are at First Presbyterian in Ft. Worth. In the immortal words of Dave Marcum: "Bring a covered dish!"

It was a good turn-out for Dave's funeral. I saw Doc, Kevin McCarthy and his wife, Jerry Overton and Kate Delaney from the 990 crowd; Dave's boss from ABC networks was there and it looked like several people from Austin made the trip.
Sorry if I left anyone out. It was an uplifting service. Dave was ordained a lay minister in the Presbyterian church the day before he died.
