Dave Mason upped to PD at Walrus

that station needs a PD yikes and a music director that lives somewhere else?........nice gigs no on air staff and the music is already out there as oldies....by the way dave you need more mic sometimes as the music sometimes makes it hard to hear your voice clearly

My appreciation for the Walrus, crappy North County signal notwithstanding, has grown significantly since sign-on. Dave has done and will continue to do an excellent job. And, Bossradioforever, yes - the music is already out there. But it takes some skill to select what still plays and what doesn't, and to string it together without train wrecks.

Congratulations Dave! He's been in San Diego a long time, is a talented jock and a strategic thinker. I'm not a proponent of on air PDs, but if that's the norm, John Lynch made a smart move with Dave. Good luck!

too bad the walrus has to broadcast mexican political commercials about voter fraud in mexico if you did not know this was owned by mex it would really make you think....should have commercials about turning in cartel thugs interesting the commercialis iare n english what a country we have now

I guess I missed something, but wasn't Bob Harlow the PD at The Walrus for the past year or so?

Yes. He continues as music director and is resting comfortably in his home in Oregon.

I've been listening occasionally and it sounds to me like they've been messing around with the music. Some weird titles in there. Some that don't even fit the format. Doesn't sound like a Bob Harlow list. Before the PD change it was truer to the format.

That's kind of how Kool was when Dave Mason was in charge, as I recall. Very fluid format, a lot of variety. But Clear Channel did not seem to care for the format in San Diego, moving it from 94.1 to 95.7 to 99.3 then flipping it to Spanish. I really liked the way Dave and Phil mixed things up, and I'm glad Dave is doing it again at 105.7! I hope it works out.

weird titles

That's what makes it fun, and funky. Over-formatted Oldies stations kill me. When's the last time you heard "Stubborn Kind of Fellow" on KRTH? Or "Catch Us If You Can"? Or "Do It Again"? Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking KRTH; Jhani does a very good Drake imitation. But there are a lot more great songs out there than just 500. And those "blue moon" titles are what keep the station fresh.

I agree, Doc..... KOOL 99.3's best days were the last five months or so.... IIRC Dave's logo was "playing not just some of your favorite oldies, but all of them".

During the final months of the old KOOL 99.3, Dave Mason did an excellent job with the format. At that time KOOL had one of the best contemporary presentations of oldies music that I had ever heard. The best part of the formatting was that it wasn't too classic rock sounding.

Thumbs up Dave! Do us proud at the Walrus!

The Walrus is a perfect example of what happens when a bunch of radio guys without a big budget take a transmitter that reaches 2/3 of the county, and choose a format considered dead in this market. It's all about the programming.

I love the station, and I was born in 1976...so I'm a few years under their target-demo. You'd be surprised at how many Gen X'rs and younger generations listen. It's funny to see KGB, 91x, 94.9, Rock, Z90, 93.3, and the Walrus on a pre-set in a 20 year old's car.
