Dave Morey Retires From KFOG?

Gary Radnich just mentioned that Dave Morey is retiring from KFOG after 26 years there ... listening now for details. Sounds like it's effective today.

Anyone know anything more?

DJ

Not effective today:

From: Me
Re: The Master Plan.

It is time to announce my retirement…EVEN THOUGH I AM NOT THAT OLD.
My decision.

Last show for KFOG will be Friday, December 19th.

Here’s the deal:
I’ve been thinking about this for a couple years. Thanks to excellent planning and despite global collapse of the financial industry, I will be able to realize a dream I’ve had for a long time.

I’m leaving the Bay Area – returning to Michigan. It’s hard to explain to someone who’s not from there so I won’t even try. I think y’all know how I feel about the Midwest.

More info in Dave's blog at http://tinyurl.com/morey-kfog

He intends to work til Dec on the morning show and keep doing 10@10 from his home studio in Michigan.
KFOG won't be the same without him. He is legendary for his amazing voice, production skills and being an all around good guy without a massive ego. He's been at KFOG since the switch was made from beautiful music to rock and roll so it's the end of an era.

To think, Dave's "Ten At Ten" music-selections and the voice-tracks of Don Pardo
(another great voice) have delighted us on KFOG since 1983...and will continue
to do so...

Dave, all the best to you on your Michigan move! Your live shows in SFO WILL be
missed...

He truly is one of the best!! All the best to you Dave.

Dave Morey is truly one of my radio heroes. As Ben Fong-Torres' article notes, Dave was one of the first openly gay deejays in US commercial radio and remains one of the few (there would be no Fernando & Greg had Dave not blazed that trail). An incredibly classy guy. Glad 10@10 will continue, but mornings will not be the same without Dave.

Not to take anything away from Dave Morey, but I was one of the first openly gay DJs in US commercial radio. The date was March 1973. The station was KWUN in Concord. Not only was I out, but I was interviewed by the station (by Pat Howlett, then public affairs director, now an advisor to the city of Concord) for my involvement with the Pacific Center, a GBLT counseling center and community center we had just established in Berkeley.

While KWUN was no KFOG, it was still a place where people such as Sacramento's Jim Hall, as well as local people Don DeFesi (KFRC newscaster) and Tom Benner (Officer Vic on KSFO) worked.

Again, this is not to take away Dave Morey's contribution in coming out, but there have been others who haven't exactly been in the closet all along, either.

In today's world of digital editing it boggles the mind Dave used to produce 10@10 with razor blades and editing tape. He will be mised. Good for him going out on his terms.

Though I haven't listened to KFOG in many years, I am curious, How long has DAVE MOREY been doing mornings? The last time, I listened to KFOG, I believe M. DUNG was doing mornings. Whatever became of the DUNG-MAN?

Dave has been on KFOG for 26 years and 1 month - since September 1982. According to this Sunday's Radio Waves, his was the first voice to be heard when KFOG flipped to rock and roll in 1982.

I don't remember Morey in any other time slot, but I'll admit I haven't been a faithful and steady "foghead," so perhaps he was in a different time slot at some point. According to this link below, M. Dung was a "staple" of the show at some point.

Anybody know the answer?

I don't know the exact timeline, but I do remember that M Dung had "the Sunday night idiot show" for a while, and he did what seemed to be a short stint as morning man, being replaced by Dave Morey. I think that was the mid '80s. I always felt that Dung's Sunday show was best suited for him, as it totally violated KFOG's standard format with lots of Motown and rare stuff, and he presented the music with knowledge and passion. He just didn't seem right as a morning man.

Morey has been the staple on KFOG mornings since then. I always felt that the show was just a simple alternative to Alex Bennet, Sarah & Vinnie, Doghouse, Stern, Lamont & Tonnelli, or whoever. You're always going to have a segment of the audience that just doesn't go for the "regular" morning shows, and that's KFOG's audience. It seems to work well.

I started at KFOG in Jan. 1983 so I just missed the launch of the format. Aside from being the mid-day guy and host of 10@10 David was also the station's production dir. I was hired as a production guy and host of the Sunday Night Idiot Show. We created all the stations imaging and promo's. David was/is a production GENUIS I learned alot by working with him and yes it was all done with blades and tape.

I was thrust into the morning show after the station management started having "issues" with Lee baby Simms
KFOG's first morning man. They offered me the slot...I would have to agree with your statement. I WASN"T suited to be a morning man but I did Ok in the slot anyway. I was the morning man for 7 years hardly a "short" stint.

The reason I was a success was BECAUSE of KFOG's format at the time, NO computer BS or linercard push button jocks. You were expected to present a show. Dave Morey is the last of the greats is was an honor to work with him.

Wow - I stand corrected, Dung. Time flies when you're having fun, and I did have fun listening to you. KFOG (and KKCY/KOFY) were truly some fine efforts at that time. I didn't realize how much of a difference the person behind the turntables (or cd players - or whatever) could make in a radio station until those people disappeared.

Wow, Dave Morey and KFRC...all in one week. Don't know if I can take anymore demises/retirements! When Dave was created, they broke the mold. His style and talent will never be replaced.
