Dave Ramsey at CRS

So good ole' Dave Ramsey gave a "pep talk" at CRS. I find this funny because syndicated shows like is has put a lot of radio folks out of work! "My grandmother used to say a great place to go when you were broke was to work. Hard work pays off," he said.......Kind of hard when so many jobs are gone now.

Come on, give Dave a break. From where he sits, "everything is coming up..." green. He's like a one-man conglomerate-

A lot of Dave's advice is great for Dave and plenty o' other folks. But his advice such as "my grandmother used to say a great place to go when you were broke was to work" and "hard work pays off" doesn't mean squat anymore. Employers want your loyalty, but they won't give employees any. I know soooo many companies that push employees to work harder and harder, to the neglect of family and any kind of private life, yet they cut people in an instant no matter how hard they've worked. The reason? Because the long-term employees with families are expensive for companies to retain, and the kid off the street or the outsourcer from across the country or the world is a whole lot cheaper. Dave's homespun advice came from another time and place.

Good point, and right on the money (pun to Dave Ramsey). There is no loyalty anymore. No employer cares how hard you work. And they always expect more. What's a private life when you are expected to do an airshift, voice-track one possible two other stations, do more production than last month because the company let 2 other hard workers go (claiming budget cuts but the GM doesn't work any harder), update the station website, update MySpace, Facebook and Twitter (required to be hired these days), and voice-track the weekend, not to mention you may have programming, promotions, or music duties. And all for no extra money. Actually for less money now than several years ago. There's no extra money to put your kids through college, have a family vacation, or even buy a new fridge when it breaks down! What? Can't afford to fix the car? Take the bus. Your boss will appreciate you more! Fat chance! And they expect you to "live the lifestyle". With what? Sorry, couldn't afford to see the movie eveyone's talking about because I had to buy bus tokens!

Excellent point. Hard work used to pay off, but no more. Employers used to be fair. Now it's about the bottom line, and cutting salaries is the best way to cut the bottom line. I will believe that employers are "in the same bost as us" when they cut their own slaries and turn back bonuses. Which will happen about the time I have to continually duck the flying pigs.

Or, to borrow one of Dave Ramsey's idioms, "live like no one else!" ;D

I had a supervisor that expected everyone to work like he did (a workaholic) just to make HIM happy. Wasn't a corporate policy, he just thought because he threw everything into his work...everyone else should. Come early..stay late and be oncall all weekend. It cost him his family --- and when 'cutting' time came...he was let go too even with all his 'extra' work

Hey Buddy, did the manager you were referring to ever actually accomplish much or did he just "work"?
We all understand that no one in radio is safe from the ax regardless of hours worked, dedication, or
kissing the company ring.

Tibbs...this was a supervisor...not a manager...and yea, he did. Very well respected, bright....just didn't like his management style.
Romer.... ::)

Buddy, LMAO ~ I agree, I hear its been well documented that nobody has liked Romers management style for like well over 70 years +. Like a Timex though....he takes a lickkin, but keeps on tickin'. Are Timex's still around?
