But you really can't say his "scheme"/plan/program is not genius. I think it's VERY genius.. simple can be the best genius. Starbuck's concept not genius? Amazon? Neither is rocket science. That's the genius of the American dream. I'd be alright being Dave. Bet most people would, too. The other folks on the Top Talkers List? Not so much. Maybe four or five.
I think perhaps you're conflating the plan that Dave sells to his listeners with successful businesses. As I indicated before, he gives good basic financial advice to people who have gotten themselves in a bind, but he's not teaching people how to be the next Starbucks, Amazon, or even Dave Ramsey. Almost all of it is just plain common sense. Don't go into debt you can't afford. Pay off the debts you do incur as quickly as possible. Live within your means. Once you're out of debt, save and invest your money.
These things are not rocket science. Building a company like Amazon or Starbucks? A bit more complicated. Or if you want to talk actual rocket science, Elon Musk. And continuing with my earlier example, Dr. Oz is not teaching his fans how to be a surgeon. He's dispensing lifestyle advice. Is that a good business? Obviously. Does it make the viewer or listener smarter? No.
I'm not saying Ramsey isn't doing well for himself. He is. Yet extrapolating that into "if I do what he tells me, I can be rich, too" is where the sales pitch comes in. It's like those house-flipping gurus who run ads all the time. If you attend their "free seminar" you might get that smart watch, a meal, and a free DVD that explains the "system," but you're not going to become a flipping guru yourself. Which brings us back to the original question:
Is Dave Ramsey's show an infomercial? Not really, but he IS selling something.
