Dave Ross, Colleen O’Brien retiring after co-hosting ‘Seattle’s Morning News’ for a decade

Late, but now Manda Factor has jumped from KNWN to anchor Seattle’s Morning News.

KNWN reacts by hiring Denise Whitaker, Chris Nguyen and Aaron Taylor to join Calvert. Chris will be interim morning co-host, Denise will be permanent.

Good move for Manda. She's one of the best female radio news voices in the country and has had an incredible run for 23 years on KOMO/KNWN in that same time slot.

Chris Nguyen and Aaron Taylor are both on the beach. Nguyen didn't last long at KOMO, months really, so this interim role feels like something to draw a paycheck while he looks for the next TV role.

Whitaker leaving KOMO in a few months sounds like a non-renewal. Despite Sinclair and KOMO-TV having the best news product in the market, they are not immune from the downturn in advertising and have been shedding reporter roles of late. Whitaker is a talented reporter though remember she was originally hired as the Morning News Co-Anchor as Margo Myers' successor but didn't last long. This is certainly an opportunity for her to keep working in a city she has made home, even if it is at a lower salary. Basically the same thing Elisa Jaffe did in the sunset of her career.

The Radio Insight headline is three Seattle TV veterans, but how is Chris Nguyen a veteran? Admittedly, I have never paid that much attention to KIRO, and KING has gone through a lot of changes since the longtime afternoon/evening team of Dennis Bounds and Jean Enderson left, but Chris Nguyen was not a voice I recognized when I heard him on KOMO a couple weeks ago. Unless he was the third anchor they use or at least used to use at 6, he filled in for Preston Phillips for about a week on Ark Seattle and the 11:00 news and then was gone.

I find that it’s fairly easy to keep up with who is anchoring and reporting for KOMO and KIRO. Both of those stations stay pretty much the same. KING and KCPQ are a bit of a revolving door.

KNWN knows KIRO is still king so this is a reaction, Denise, Chris, and Aaron are good choices, makes me wonder what happened to get them to jump from TV to radio.
Denise is supposedly retiring from TV soon. Chris lasted about two months (or less???) at KOMO and suddenly was gone without explanation. Aaron was dumped by KIRO (either cost-cuttting or didn't fit as well as expected).

That doesn't really answer the question. Where has Nguyen been all this time?
What does it matter?

He was either laid off from KOMO after a couple a weeks or decided it wasn't a good fit and left on his own. Either way, he's been on the beach, looking for work. Sounds like he found some.

Why doesn't anyone just answer the question I asked? The reasons he only lasted a couple months at most at KOMO aren't relevant to my curiosity. I would be curious about why that happened, but someone lasting only a couple of months in a given position isn't completely unheard of. The Radio Insight article said that KNWN hired three Seattle TV veterans, but I had never heard of Chris Nguyen until he popped up on KOMO.

Your question has been answered.

Chris Nguyen was briefly at KOMO as an evening anchor. He left, for whatever reason. He has subsequently been on the beach. Now he is at KNWN on a short term contract, presumably while he looks for another role on TV.

What are your further questions beyond this summary?

Perhaps it depends on one's definition of 'veteran'.

For the sake of this discussion, let's define veteran as anyone who joined any Seattle TV station on or before August 11, 2020, the day I left the market as my permanent residence. Was Nguyen anywhere in the market before then?

No.

If your issue is with the headline framing him as a market veteran rather than the substance of who he is and why he's joining KNWN, take it up with RadioInsight / Lance who also runs this board.
