Dave Sholin: Day 1 Thoughts

I missed the opening pitch (couldn't get the online stream running -- too much web traffic?) but I've been listening most of the morning, and Dave Sholin sounds great.

He may need a sidekick -- here's an idea: how about a guy instead of a girl? -- but if he's gotta handle it on his own, he's more than up to the task.

The music mix has been very good, and overall I give the new KFRC high marks. It will only get better once they add Celeste Perry and ... oh shoot, I promised not to squeal about the other new (but very familiar) voice who'll be coming on soon.

Are you out of the Bay Area today, Boss? If not, you can always listen to the program the old fashioned way on this low-tech instrument call a r-a-d-i-o.

"...but I've been listening most of the morning, and Dave Sholin sounds great."

Good to hear - I haven't been able to tune in yet (I commute on BART). I just felt like starting my morning with a snarky remark.

Errrrrr... I... uhhhh...

I'll have to write that one down and look into it. Do you think one of these radio devices might be available at a local retailer of some sort?

If you think the technology will catch on, I might invest in one.

So who is the female voice (not Celeste Perry) working since 10 a.m.?

Hmmm... good question, D.J.

I think it's Kat from Live 105.

This is just like home! I'll ask and answer all of my own questions in this thread. You can even pretend to be mildly interested, just like my wife does, if you feel like exerting the energy!

(But make sure that you're pretending to be mildly interested; anything other than that will get you automatically booted from the thread. You have been warned.)

So, anyway...

Broadway Bill Lee (ex-KFRC, KMEL) is the new afternoon guy at WCBS-FM 101 in NYC, starting this Thursday at 1:01 p.m. (cleverly enough), as the station flips back to Oldies. The press release makes it sound like WCBS-FM will probably mirror the current KFRC in many ways.

(P.S. -- I will post my response to this post in a few minutes.)

Wow...I just caught about 30 minutes during my lunch hour....vanilla! Is that Celeste Perry?

Elliott! What are you doing in my thread? It's my thread! Mine, mine, mine!

Great. Now everybody will post stuff here. I was having so much fun, and you wrecked it. Open the floodgates.

> Is that Celeste Perry?

No. It's Kat. From Live 105. She's sitting in until Celeste starts in a few days.

They wanted to make sure that they had other voices on the station after Sholin's shift, before Celeste and ... um, the new afternoon person start.

Steve Moore, KFRC's imaging and production guy, is covering the 3 - 7 p.m. shift...

Maybe I should get some Q-tips, sounds a bit like Art Morrison to me. Hmmmm...

WOW...KFRC is sounding Great here in St Petersburg, Florida. Had the computer on all night ready for Sholin's Sign on and pretty much have been living on the west coast time zone today listening to the Duke All morning. Thanks for the scoop on KAT, I was a little confused when I heard her as I was expecting Celeste.

From what you said Steve is just filling in for now, he has a nice set of pipes but I would hope another Bay Area great would be taking Afternoons, Any hints who might be lined up for afternoons???

Thank You CBS for bringing back KFRC and the Duke

2 legends in one day and history begins to rebuild itself at 106 KFRC

Yes. A male sidekick would be awesome! The show sounded GREAT!!! Welcome back Duke and KFRC!

Nope, Not Art, but he has a tendancy to sound like him at times I have recently observed.

Mike Preston is coming up at 7 PM. Who would have thought that was going to happen! A switch for sure! And is Steve Moore the same Steve Moore that worked for KROY 1240 in Sacramento and on KEZR in San Jose?

Don't forget KSJO - KUFX - Channel 104.9

ROLL CALL,,,,WHERE IS JOHN MACK FLANAGAN????? Funny,, in New York, WCBS would probably pay most anything to get Cousin Brucie back, and Norm N Nite,,,, CBS,, you should give the Bay Area,, the Best Afternoon guy AKA JMF a lucritive contract,, to get him back on the AIR!!! Please no tricks,, Do not consider Blackstone or Parker!!! Kenny in Concord

"2 legends in one day and history begins to rebuild itself at 106 KFRC"

Please pardon the frequency correction, Martinezguy - but in Bay Area radio branding, "106" is 106/KMEL ..."Jammin' the Most Hip Hop and R&B," and all that. 106.1 hasn't been KFRC's frequency since the late 1970s when the brainiacs at RKO General sold it, totally overlooking the fact that music radio was already moving to high-fidelity stereo FM. I guess they thought the Big 610 would rule forever.

The new KFRC is 106.9.

Wasn't RKO forced to sell all their stations about this time with KFRC AM being one of the last to go?

The RKO situation took place later starting in the Early 80's with KFRC "Magic 61" being the final Sale in 87/88.

The 1977 Sale of KFRC-FM to KMEL was a Corporate Move from New York, RKO felt FM was not going to take off and were making money with the BIG 610 KFRC, lets dump this FM thing.....Besides the 1985 RKO/KFRC Game Zone Concept dumping the FM was one of biggest mistakes in Bay Area Radio History.

I'd add ABC selling KSFX off was a huge mistake as well. (It ultimately became KKSF!)
