This is frequently done. Not always someone like Mike, either...sometimes someone unknown outside the organization in HR or otherwise. They'll either sift through them, and pull the appropriate ones for the PD, or else throw them all in a box for him or her to go through. If they anticipate a large number of packages (likely), my guess is they'll weed out the ones that are never going to be considered.

I wish we could go back with creative energetic PD's, but the companies will not allow decisions to be made by only one person at an 80 million dollar station. That is the way big bizz works for now.

Unfortunately, you're less likely to get a winning station from a group of guys who couldn't program the police band in a riot than you are that one person who knows programming. Sure, it's a risk...but so far, the suits almost always do worse.

Ron Parker?? HA HA HA!!!!

"Ron Parker?? HA HA HA!!!!"

Not funny. Bite your tongue (keyboard?), blackhole. Actually, Ron was OK - not first rate, but tolerable - I could take him as long as he was Cammy-free.

Charlie Van Dyke is also in Texas, if I remember correctly, Michael - though I heard that he has retired from regular radio work. He'd be a great choice for image work, assuming Beau Weaver isn't interested in continuing.

Llew: Nope...unless something's changed since Friday (when I spoke to him last), Charlie is in Phoenix...about four miles from my office, in fact. He's been here (with the exception of the 1998-1999 commute to and from KRTH, Los Angeles) since the early 80s, and in that time has been at KOY, KTAR, KFYI, KKFR, KPSN and KGLQ (his last regular morning show, with me as his partner). He does station imaging fulltime from a studio in his home for TV and radio stations around the country.

You're splitting hairs, now Michael - Phoenix...Texas...it's all the same - dry, hot, and Republican ;D...though I'll admit you have a higher class of Republican - McCain, Kyl, and historically Goldwater...no Bush.

I know you rarely toot your own horn, but tell us more about Charlie's last morning show, with you as his partner. Sounds interesting...

Charlie and I were hired by Nationwide to do mornings on KGLQ, just acquired from Bonneville, in September 1997. It was a classic hits station (relaunched by Nationwide as "Eagle 96.9"), but Charlie and I had been kicking around our generation's lack of a full-service morning show (a blend of music, news, talk), something our parents' generation had in abundance, and Nationwide liked the concept.

The previous morning show under Bonneville was music-intensive and ranked #27 in both 25-54 and 18-34. In 90 days, we took it to #12 25-54, and the real surprise...to #10 18-34. Not bad for a couple of guys in their 40s. An aircheck of the show exists at Reelradio.

Three days after the ratings came out, Nationwide informed us that they were selling all their radio stations. Jacor ended up the buyer, and we were all out. I had kept my gig doing TV news, so I just got to sleep in later. Charlie went to K-Earth in L.A. (which was his last regular morning gig...I should have said "in Phoenix" in my first post)...and Jacor flipped the station to "Mix 96.9"...which it is today, under Clear Channel.

Only our news anchor, Mary Reilly, works daily in Phoenix radio today...playing "Whatever We Want" middays at Bonneville's "98.7 The Peak"...for the PD Nationwide was foolish enough to let get away at 96.9 when it took over...Joel Grey.

And to bring this back to San Francisco...that's where I first heard Charlie Van Dyke...in 1969, on KFRC. I was 13. I imagined (from that voice) that he was 40. Little did I know he'd just turned 21. And yes, he'd be terrific for imaging on the new KFRC.

Please remember that Charlie Van Dyke used to be the Imaging voice for K-101 for several years. I'm not exactly sure of the lenght of time...1988-1998 or something like that.

Re: Dave Sholin Cool!!!

The Duke to mornings at KFRC 106.9 FM! Wonderful! There goes the budget for hiring anyone else for the rest of the day or evenings! He didn't come cheap you can count on that!

After all the money that CBS lost on the FREE FMs, Dave 'The Duke' Sholin probably looks like a bargain! Plus CBS lives up to their promise of bringing legendary on-air personalities to KFRC.

Now I hope they can get John Mack Flanagan. Don't B.S. him, either. Hire him as a FULL TIME personality!
