Something doesn't smell right. Dave has been a talented, straight news anchor at KFWB, KNX and KABC. He's a flexible pro and can do any tap-dance the puppeteers request. Plus, he's a damned nice guy. This whole Merlin debacle may finally bring Mr. Homel to his knees. So far, both NY and Chicago are amateur disasters. And now they can one of their very few professionals.
 
Seems like a lot of 20/20 hindsight on this topic...lots of agreement on how they are getting it wrong. How would YOU attract a younger than 65+ audience to a news format on FM? Do you really have to have spent your entire career in Chicago to win here?
 
Tom Taylor's reporting that Walt Sabo, the architect of the whole Chocolate FM thing, is on his way out at Merlin and that Michaels is demanding a retool at both stations to a classic news wheel format. It seems to me that it's early enough to do this kind of retool and save their butts, but maybe not.
 
I think they should just blow this whole news format up and go Modern AC. In doing this they can go after the Mix which has been leaning more CHR the last couple of years anyway. And they can maybe retrieve a few of the old Q101 listeners who are looking for anything remotely close to an alternative station on the dial as well.

The only way I can see an all-news format working on the FM dial is during the hours the Bears are playing on WBBM/WCKG. And that's not too many hours in a given year to make up for the debacle they started!
 
You guys see Feder's tweet? Randy Michaels was busted for OVI (DUI) in Ohio this morning- he bonded out (probably using other people's money).

This is exactly why he was let go! Don't you get it? He's not a circus clown. He belongs on WBBM, not Chicago's News Clown 101.1
