Dave Williams out at WWWN Chicago (FM News)

It's been there three months and he's already out the door. Supposedly fired because the station is moving to traditional news and going away from life-style news.

Something doesn't smell right. Dave has been a talented, straight news anchor at KFWB, KNX and KABC. He's a flexible pro and can do any tap-dance the puppeteers request. Plus, he's a damned nice guy. This whole Merlin debacle may finally bring Mr. Homel to his knees. So far, both NY and Chicago are amateur disasters. And now they can one of their very few professionals.

I'm going to have to agree Dave Williams is a real pro and Clear Channel, CBS, or even Entercom among many others would be wise to hire him. Randy and Walter are going to take it in the shorts on this new foray into all news in New York and Chicago because the money and the owners patience is going to run out before they can turn these two stations around, what losers!

Merlin's foray into FM news is bold, and slightly ahead of it's time. The real problem is the cost. They have to generate ratings and revenue sooner rather than later, but Williams firing seems weird. He is a pro, and quite versatile. He's been working at news stations since the mid 70's and before that programmed 2 RKO stations, KRTH and WHBQ. He knows how to win, so like I said, just weird to give someone of his stature the boot so quickly. The again, seasoned pro's are being let go a lot lately, even here in LA.

Tom Taylor reports this morning that it looks like Sabo may be on his way out at Merlin, as Michaels has indicated that the station is going away from the whole lifestyle thing and more towards being a mainline all-news format, like the CBS stations. Still, it's strange that Williams got fired, since from all indications from you guys the guy can do hard news (and with WWWN's awful initial ratings, it's not like Chicagoans have him pegged as the Kim-Kardashian-and-chocolate guy).
