Dave's Price May Not Be Right!

Per CBS.com's Price website, John O'Hurley, Todd Newton, and Doug Davidson are going to do non-aired auditions for the Price is Right hosting gig. Thoughts?

I think Doug's shortcoming was not anything with his hosting. Remember, "The New Price is Right" had a far different look and feel to it. Modernizations everywhere, no contestant's row, etc.

Any of the three would be an excellent choice.

As a lifelong fan of Price, I have never understood the animosity towards the 1994 version; it was simply an update on the format in precisely the same way the 1972 debut updated the original Price. Watching closely, Doug Davidson either had great empathy for the contestants and a genuine enthusiasm for them to win--perhaps even more so than Barker has conveyed in recent years. In addition, he seemed very comfortable with the games. Of course he had a different style and energy level--as did Bob compared to Bill Cullen, or Art James for that matter.

The failure of 1994's Price owed as much to the overpromising of the syndicators/over expectations of the stations as anything else. At that point, game shows were still being sold as the Wheel/Jeopardy killers--from You Bet Your Life to Trump Card to Million Dollar Chance of Lifetime to Price, too many stations thought they had the magic bullet to overcome the big 2 in syndication. Today, a relatively small percentage of stations use Millionaire or Family Feud in access--instead, they use them as a solid alternative to talk in daytime or fringe.

Quite frankly, the 1994 version of Price showed us an image of how the show could have evolved in look and style (think about how Wheel today looks in some ways so different than 26 years ago, but is still instantly recognizable), and that's a good thing. I'd like to see them institute that kind of face lift when the new version launches. Let the new host, whoever it is, have something new to work with, just as Leno got some spruced up digs when he assumed the chair from Carson.

I agree. Doug did a good job when he was host during that installment. But you have to remember that the syndicated nighttime version of the show NEVER did well. Even when Dennis James, Tom Kennedy, or countless others hosted it. I thought Doug was the best out of all of them. How long can he ride that gig on Y & R?

Doug's got that tongue-in-cheek Pat Sajak brand of humor, which isn't that much different than Barker's. But you can't be a Barker clone or you'll fail.

The new host is also going to have to be of sturdy build. Even today Barker complains about "the Samoans" who actually pick him up and throw him around the stage. :D

The problem with Davidson's version was that they changed everything too much and Barker's version was still on at the time.

I still say Jeff Probst should be Bob's successor, but it's clear that he enjoys doing Survivor too much to give it up for a studio gig, so it won't happen. Of these three candidates, Davidson is the only one who's even tolerable. How many shows have O'Hurley and Newton failed at now?

Jeff is still doing "Survivor", rule him out. I think Todd Newton would be the guy to step into Bob's shoes.

The fact that Newton has already been doing successful "TPIR" stage shows at casinos in Vegas and Branson, MO alone should make him a front runner.

Since Doug Davidson's status on The Young And The Restless is now questionable since of what happened yesterday on the show when Sheila as Phyllis(played in a double role by Michelle Stafford) killed herself and Paul and Michael saw the whole thing and they don't know what to do with the body. I imagine since Paul is now in a mess himself, his character will probably go to prison. So this now plays into the equation that Doug Davidson could become host of The Price Is Right once again. And I actually liked the 1994 version of TPIR, but it was a shame that it lasted a few months.

Informed word has it that the new TPIR "star"will be dorky Dave Price who is CBS prexy Les Mooves' personal favorite. Moonves has made it clear that Price is the right price. The is ths same guy who thinks Julie Chen has talant. IMHO, I don't think there's a future for TPIR after Barker. He IS the show.

It's way too early to call O'Hurley a failure on Feud; what's more, it wasn't his show to start with this time, as he takes over for two other hosts. To Tell The Truth was, IMO, a decent remake, and John was the best part of it (yes, I know, the purists will cry that Kitty Carlisle wasn't on save for the one appearance, but let's move on into the new century). The failure there was trying to revive a dead genre--the low-key panel game show. Those days are over, at least for now.

Many people felt--and some probably still do--that Carson was the Tonight Show. But just like Barker, there were those that came before him, and if the audience simply gives it a chance, there can be those that come after.

As for Todd Newton, I saw the live show with him in Atlantic City, and he certainly would make a good host. You can't compre Hollywood Showdown and Whammy to the big leagues of a network or syndicated game, so to say he's failed is comparing apples and oranges. (Besides, other than Lingo, Whammy may have been GSN's best original show.)

In fact, I think Les is married to Julie Chen, is he not?

I still think Rich Fields would be a great host. John O'Hurley might be the most recognizable person, if that's what they're looking for.

Les Moonves IS married to Julie Chen. I'm sure he DOES think she has talent and it probably has nothing whatsoever to do with hosting a tv show. ;D

As for the comment about Leno getting spruced up digs when Carson left...when Leno first took over, about the only new thing on the show was the introduction of the show, the host and the band. It was the same stage, the same interview area, the same band area. Eventually, they constructed a new set on another stage and moved over there. The new stage, as it does now, allowed Leno to walk "into" the audience (or to the front row of the audience to shake everyone's hands) to take advantage of his "comedian" background so he could interact better with them during his monologue. Too bad that after 15 years he's never improved his horrific interviewing skills. But that's another subject for another thread. ;D

As a fan of game shows, my selection as the new host of "The Price Is Right"
should be Todd Newton, he has the experience, especially doing the Las Vegas
version of this show, and i think the viewers will like him, if he is selected.

Whom ever replaces Bob Barker, the pressure will be horendous. Just like Conan O'Brien stepping into Letterman's role at Late Night on NBC. At TPIR, the first shows will have tremendous ratings as lookie loos want to see the "New" Host. Then the ratings will slide down below what they are used to seeing. THEN... if they do not tweak the formula, the show will come back to life and continue going.

Rich Fields is a horrible announcer. He needs to go back to doing tv weather in Palm Springs. They should start out with a new announcer in the post-Barker era.

I'm very supportive of Todd Newton.
I agree. It isn't the success or failure of previous gameshows that *should* make or break a host, but instead what made the host great regardless of what game show it was.

Todd has great personality for the job, and therefore should have it.

John O'hurly isn't bad, but I do hope he will be successful with Family Feud and as the host of an all new Joker's wild, which, I understand is in the works...

Doug Davidson, from what I understand, is best with acting on soap(s), and should stay where he is most needed.

I agree. My first choice would be Shadoe Stevens.
