David Haines Dies
The WPGC-FM/Washington News Director and Donnie Simpson Morning Show news anchor died suddenly yesterday. According to a report at dcrtv.com that cited an unnamed source, Haines suffered a pulmonary embolism as a result of cancer treatment. He was reportedly in his late 50s.
"Aside from being a true professional, David brightened up everyone's day with his smile, attitude and energy," read a statement on the WPGC website. "He will be missed!"
WPGC-FM morning host Simpson also told listeners of Haines' passing as he opened his show today. Haines had been absent from Simpson's show for the last several weeks.
Haines had been with Infinity CHR/Rhythmic WPGC-FM since 1991. Before that, he spent seven years as the morning news anchor at then-CHR WAVA/Washington, under Emmis. Haines was part of the original WAVA lineup following its format change from AOR, first working with J.J. McKay. He later gained fame at WAVA with his signature "burnt toast and coffee time" news as a member of the Don and Mike show, which aired on the station in morning drive from its mid-1980s formation until fall 1991.
Haines began his career in Florida and has also worked at such stations as WOKY and WZUU in Milwaukee.
