this kinda has been coming for a long time ever since NBC 5 hire Rick Mitchell a few years ago, David's been doing this a long time, but he's getting very old and pretty much, he's earned a retirement. but for now, David is enter Semi-Retirement, which means he'll only be brought in to cover the worst of the worst DFW weather.
plus, in the over 70 year history of WBAP-TV/KXAS-TV history, there has been only 2 chief meteorologist and that was the late Harold Taft and David Finfrock. with this announcement, Rick Mitchell, the man who Finfrock and NBC 5 have been grooming for years is now the 3rd man to be named chief meteorologist in the station's 70 year history. right now, David's not fully leaving NBC 5, just he's entering semi-retirement so the day he fully calls it a career is gonna be a sad day for DFW TV. this marks a end of a era at NBC 5 and the start of the next era in NBC 5 weather coverage and Rick had won me over as soon as he debuted due to the fact that he has experience at covering severe weather due to his time in Oklahoma City working for KOCO 5 and not to mention he did have a cameo in the 1996 Helen Hunt/Bill Paxton severe weather disaster drama Twister.
