David Gold- Dallas/Miami talk veteran - on 1040-WWBA

David Gold - mentioned in the Brian Fasulo departure post - is on the air now.

He was probably the biggest name in Dallas talk radio in the late 1980s on KLIF, when it had more local shows. Management gutted it to where it's nearly automated iwth most of its shows coming in from satellite.

Gold says he was the first original Tampa conservative radio host, from 1980-1983.
He said the station isn't in existence anymore.
Then he went to Miami. Then Dallas, where he's doing his show from today.

He sounds good. I remember him as a big conservative. Should fit the 1040 mold.

www.goldtalk.com is his site.

He was a host in the early 80's on WPLP (570), the first AM talker in this market -- at least, the first AM talker to survive more than a year or two. Before WPLP, most talk radio in Tampa was in the form of nighttime shows on music stations. People were habituated to listen to talk at night but not in the daytime. So no surprise, Gold drew the station's strongest numbers. Of course, it helped that two of the music stations bailed out of nighttime talk during his reign. His disadvantage was WPLP's weak nighttime signal, overcome by Cuban interference in most of Tampa and anywhere north of Largo.

Gold wasn't precisely the first conservative -- there were plenty of hosts who leaned more one way or the other. But he was the first to firmly identify with "movement" conservatism and the first to come up with cute names for liberals -- such as "goo-goos" (short for goodie-goodies), not to be confused with the all-female band the "Go-Go's," another early-80s phenomenon. It helps to think of Gold as Conservatalk 0.8, Rush as Conservatalk 2.0, Hannity as Conservatalk 3.0, and Schnitt as perhaps Conservatalk 3.5.

Listening to him today was sad. He sounded old (at least a decade older than his chronological age, mid-fifties), slow and nostalgic. He is certainly capable of delivering the raw meat but not at the modern pace of talk radio. His best days were in the slower, pre-1985 era of talk radio, and he sounds even slower and a good bit more melancholy now than he did then. His argument against Steve Stanton's campaign for transsexual rights was all but demolished by a deep-voiced transsexual named "Georgia". Georgia didn't argue, just told his/her life story and made Gold's fuming about Stanton sound ridiculous. Any other host would have delivered a couple of zings and hung up, giving the red-meaters the victory they want to have in the wrestling ring of conservative talk radio. Sad. But at least he let the callers talk, and at least he took callers that were obviously not plants, a rarity in the post-Limbaugh world. I am sure Georgia was no plant or made-up call.

I actually called him on the radio today. To tell you the truth he sounded bad. Not the bright energetic David Gold from WPLP. It was kind of sad.

Maybe he started smoking and lost his core voice. I don’t know but trust me, it was NOT THERE.

In my opinion, as a listener, he sounded a lot better today. Yes, unfortunately, he's older than he was when he was hot on talk radio.
He still had a lot of fire today.

Did David work at WIOD in Miami? He talks about his Miami work (in terms of the Hispanic influence and illegal immigration issue). I wasn't in Miami, which seems like a dull talk radio town with almost entirely syndicated fare, so I don't know.

I recall hearing Gold in Dallas.

Though I'm hardly as far right or Libertarian as Neil Boortz or Gold, as he describes himself as having conservative and libertarian beliefs, it is good to hear "The Land of Gold" again.

I also listened today and I must say it was again VERY SAD. He is 56 years old and he sounds 76 at best.

I don’t know what happened but it is sad. He once was a super talk host. His timing was perfect and he was right on top of things.

Now… eh.. not so much.

Btw, Rush is also 56 years old and sounds like he is 30. Boortz is 60 something and sounds like he is 30.

I listened to Gold today for the first time. I was out on the road before 6 PM and the office radio is generally planted on 970. I do not remember Gold on his prior stint in Tampa as I really didn't become familar with the talk genre until the early 90s.

His cadence takes a lot of getting used to. He has the accent of Mark Belling, the tone of Lionel, and the ends of his words occasionally drag in almost a Larry Flynt-like fashion. He sounded to be between the age of 75-80. Makes for a unique sound, to be sure. He didn't have any challening callers while I was tuned in, so I don't have a feel for how he performs against opposing viewpoints. He seems quite well-informed, opinionated, and experienced in radio. His delivery was somewhat slow (kind of like the late Chris Thomas' on WDAE), but it seems to fit him.

Overall, I will definitely listen again. He grew on me over the course of the afternoon.

Doesn't he do the type of programming Lassiter used to make fun of? This guy was on the air before I listened to Talk.

I only go as far back as:

Bob Lassiter (nights on 570 WPLP)
"Uncle" Dick Norman (Afternoons on 970 WFLA), may he rest in peace.
Ted Webb - Sports (late afternoon on 970)

He and Lassiter must have been on PLP about the same time. Mr. Gold just sounds too old for the demo's a station needs to attract advertisers. That what my comment about Paul Gonzalez was aimed at before, not meant to be a shot at either men.

He was on PLP a couple of years before Lassiter. Interestingly, he was a fulltimer on WGBS 710 in Miami, the station where Lassiter moved into talk on a part-time basis.

Now he sounds old and confused. I hope he is not "The One" for afternoons.
I didn't hear any confusion today, and I heard most of his show.
He came up with some creative things such as developing a theme song for Hillary's campaign.

Did some of you all bitch about his performance when he was on the air in Tampa as well?

Too bad there's not a site with David Gold airchecks from his WPLP days. You can hear the difference.

I do like his willingness to let the callers open up and reveal more of themselves. It's a nice contrast to the Cult of the Host that has evolved in the Limbaugh-Hannity era, where callers are little more than ornamentation. "The purpose of the caller is to make the host look good." I think his content since Tuesday has been on target for the WWBA audience, unlike his immediate predecessor.

But something happened to his voice. The pace is way slower, the strange accent has gotten more pronounced. He's originally from Philadelphia and went to college in Colorado. There is kind of a twangy accent that some people have in Colorado, but I can't believe that's his original Philly accent. Bob Lassiter (of Collingswood NJ) had a pretty standard Philly accent ("extRAWdinary"), and David had some of that, but now it's this totally nasal thing. There's a quaver there that wasn't there in 1982. Maybe it's those allergies he talks about. Moving to Tampa full-time won't help his allergies -- he'll have watery eyes all through March and April. He's not that old -- he shouldn't sound as old as he sounds.

It is my understanding he is phoning in his show from Texas using some kind of codec. Maybe with a good mic processor, he can improve the sound of his voice

When David was here in the early days he sounded GREAT. His timing was perfect his skill with callers was fantastic and he was very entertaining. Remember, in those days the most popular talk show host were liberals and David went against that grain with wonderful wit and style.

I was sure he was off to be a big star. I have no idea what happened. Now he is totally off and his timing is not there and worse than all his voice got very weak and old sounding.

Sorry to see this happen to a once very good talent.

I wish I could listen to some. I'll have to keep looking online.

...the strange accent has gotten more pronounced.

My first impression is that he was from Wisconsin, hence my earlier comparison to Mark Belling.

Dave Gold = really bad radio  ;D
That's out of liine.

David was for years one of Dallas' top talk show hosts. He has a significant radio career under his belt, compared to many whiners on this board.

According to Mark Larsen earlier this AM, Dennis Miller, that Dennis Miller will be doing the show from 3-6 PM. Is the David Gold experiment over??
