David Guetta - When Love Takes Over crossing over to CHR

nd2023

Banned
I have heard it played on 3 CHR stations so far: Z100, 92.3 Now, and thanks to a tropo opening this morning, I heard it on Hot 100.5 in Norfolk.

The song is starting to click! :)
Getting love at 93.3 FLZ Tampa, Movin 99.7 San Francisco, 106.9 K-Hits Tulsa, K-104 Poughkeepsie, Hot Jamz 88.9 & 94.5 Seattle (which is now a CHR/Pop but still leans Rhythmic), I-91 Tacoma, B-96 Chicago, 95.5 The Beat Atlanta, 98.9 Magic FM Colorado Springs, Wild 104.9 oklahoma City, 97.7 K-Win Stockton, Kiss 98.5 Buffalo, Z-101 Buffalo, 94.5 VFX Northern Utah, B-92 Charleston, Hot Z95 Corpus Christi, 95 Triple X Burlington, and 101.7 The Beach in the Hamptons.

All the Dance stations are showing love as well.

It's been #1 on the combined Dance Radio airplay chart at FMQB for a couple of weeks now, so yeah, dance radio is feelin' it. :p

I don't love this track but it's a no-brainer....CHRs can sell it as the follow up single to "love Is Gone" by David Guetta featuring Kelly Rowland of Destiny's child.. It's a good radio fit ..not too risky and Kelly Rowland gives the track automatic credibility....I hope this song doesn't impead the progress of Kim Sozzi "Feel The Love" that has been getting some CHR love...you know how CHR works "there is only room for one dance track in rotation at a time" blah blah blah

Hopefully, if anything, this only opens the door for more dance crossover acceptance. Since most people have the "Hey this works, so why don't we copy / keep trying something similar..." mentallity, this might be good news. I am just waiting to see how long it takes to reach Phoenix. I bet I know which station will (or might already have started to) play it first - in REGULAR rotation.

Kelly Rowland had credibility, but I'm not sure how much credibility I'd give her, due to the success level of some of her past hits. A Beyonce and David Guetta collaboration would've probably been much much safer and guaranteed. I still say Kelly Rowland and David Guetta teamed up is still a tad bit "obscure" for rhythmic radio sound, although today, it COULD happen. I can see this jumping into top 40 though. If she makes her biggest break as a solo artist with this song, then that would be a HUGE benefit in so many ways.

Kim Sozzi? I'd have to say I'd be REALLY surprised to see this in top 40 regular rotation, especially on the ones that lean rhythmic. I'm still amazed at how Enrique Iglesias ft Ciara never made it in the U.S. (or at least on the stations I've checked) yet.

I'm lovin the way "When Love Takes Over" is developing on the radio. More Top 40 stations are jumping on board.
Q-102 Cincinnati is on it, Kiss 95.7 Hartford, Hot 95.7 Houston, Kiss XM, Q-94 richmond, KJ 103 Oklahoma City, Y-100.9 Santa Rosa, 107.9 The Mix Salt Lake City, Hits 106 Monmouth-Ocean Counties, 99.7 Kiss FM Springfield, 103.3 Kiss FM Boise, 103.3 The Vibe Daytona Beach, 93.1 The Zone Honolulu, Fun 107 New Bedford, 97.7 KRCK Palm Springs, and 102.5 The Party Nashville.

Big week in general for Dance/Pop with Pitbull climbing to number 2 on Billboard's Hot 100 with "I Know You Want Me", Lady Gaga's "Lovegame" ("Pokerface" is at 5) moving up to number 6, Sean Kingston staying put at number 9, and BEP remain at number 1 with "Boom Boom Pow. Their new one "Got A Feeling" was produced by David Guetta (hence why it sounds a bit like "Love Is Gone") is also expected to do well.

Expect the David Guetta/Kelly Rowland collaboration to break into the Top 40 of the CHR/Pop in the coming days. 102.7 KIIS-FM L.A. just added it! 97.1 Amp Radio has already been on it. Hot 97 New York has been playing it in the mixshows! Z-100, Now 92.3, and 103.5 KTU all have it in medium rotation.
Expect Power 96 and Y-100 Miami as well as Wild 94.9 San Francisco to add it very soon.
Quite a few Rhythmic CHRs are supporting it: WCRX 88.1 Chicago, Hot 103.5 Huntsville, Hot 97.5 Las Vegas, Jammin 97.9 Monterrey-Salinas, Jammin 103.9/92.3 Tri-Cities, Wired 96.5 Philly, 104.3 Hit FM El Paso, 103.5 The Bomb Sacramento, B-96 Chicago, Q-97 Fresno, Hot 105 Modesto-Merced, and Wild 104 Mcallen.

Some of the CHR/Pop stations that have recently added it: Hot 107.9 Ft. Wayne, 98.7 The Beat Charleston West Va, Wild 104.9 Oklahoma City, 97 BHT and 98.5 KRZ Wilkes Barre-Scranton, 93.7 STW Wilmington, Z-93.7 Reno, 106.1 BLI Long Island, XL 106.7 Orlando, Kiss 105.3 Gainesville, 104.7 K-Duk Eugene, Kiss 95.1 Melbourne, Q-97.9 Portland, Z-104 Madison, Planet 102.3 Corpus Christi, 94.5 KSMB Lafayette, 95.1 KHOP Modesto-Stockton, 98.5 Kiss FM Peoria, Z-88 Akron, and Hot 107.1 Denver.
Mcallen's Adult CHR Hot Kiss 106.3 is also on it.

Now... I don't know how many people have noticed, but the extended club version of the track is a lot less radio friendly than the original, and I don't think this will help in any way. First of all, the intro is way too long before any vocals finally popped in. I tried to use it in a quick mix (not live of course) and it took me a while to figure something out. Second of all, unlike playing the original and mixing the original radio edit with Ne-yo's "closer" or something like that, the extended version would very noticeably stick out, due to how large portions of it sounds. There really needs to be an extended club version that's shorter and doesn't include any elements that the original radio edit doesn't already have. I see it doing ok in regular playlist rotation, but will dj's on a top 40 or rhythmic station be thinking "hmmm.... I really feel like throwing this in right now, because it's so appropriate, easy to mix, and conveniently arranged!" Ultimix or somebody needs to put out a better extended copy a.s.a.p. if it hasn't already been done. I did a mix where I played no more than 3 to 3 and a half minutes of each song. Imagine, if I didn't plan carefully, how much of the "when love takes over" vocals I would've gotten in within 3 minutes! ...well, I might as well - http://www.4shared.com/file/110991440/fef28dc9/DPR_Hitmix_10.html

Well I'm glad someone did find a very acceptable extended version to play in the radio mix show! Sounded pretty good, too! I liked it more than the first time when they just threw in the original radio mix in the mix. I guess it makes everything I said earlier about the remixes rather pointless.

I see on Movin 99.7 in San Fransisco, they've just been mixing the original radio version. I recently did that too, but I think I'm going to find a different and extended version to use in mix show play for now on.

The song went to number one in the UK and Ireland last week, and just debuted at number 2 in his home country of France.
The song is currently up to number 35 on the CHR/Pop chart according to Mediabase :)
B-93.7 Greenville (lovely city), 101.5 CIL Carbondale, 92 Pro Providence, 104.7 Kiss FM Phoenix all recently added the song.
On the Rhythmic CHR panel 96.1 The Beat Colorado Springs just added the song.

Told you guys Kim Sozzi was gaining CHR love It was added to a few CHRs this week including Q102 Philly!!!!!!! I didn't want this Guetta song to impead Sozzi's progress

I didnt see Kim Sozzi in any of the reports getting spins on Q. David Guetta is getting some solid spins. Guetta is going to be the bigger song.

I miss hearing this song on the radio! But I'll be leaving L.A. soon back to Phoenix so that will change. Only one station in Phoenix has picked it up, but it seems to be doing well on that station, so hopefully others will recognize this. They are eventually either going to have to play that, or the new Nina Sky because I'm sure at least one of them will have to be big enough hits to receive all around unbiased attention.
