David Letterman Talking About NBC Late Night

The whole Leno and Conan subject has been a big talk on Letterman the past two nights. Having a field day of sorts with the whole matter. But should he be talking this much about it all? Sure he can have fun with it as Letterman is doing fine since Conan took over The Tonight Show. Whats everyone think?

Good question. I think Letterman needs to be in the fray. Late night is experiencing a renewed viewership due to all this, and Dave needs to be a part of it to take advantage of the hype. People want to see what all the hosts are saying, that is why viewership is up. And that includes Letterman.

Your right. I like when Dave said both Jay and Conan should host The Tonight Show together. Doubt either of them would like that. The other idea NBC could do is just give back Tonight to Jay and Late Night back to Conan. But where would Jimmy go?

He'd to go with a healthy buy-out of his contract from NBC. Not a bad deal.

There's only so much room in the corral and he's the "new hire," - last one hired, first one ... to walk with a contract buy-out.

For those of you who saw Jimmy Kimmel last night, that was hilarious! Jimmy came out as Leno with a big grey wig and a fine impersonation of Jay. He did at least the first half of the show as Leno (maybe the whole thing, couldn't stay awake for it) with Cleto (sp?) as Kevin Eubanks playing a few notes between each joke and laughing at everything that was said. Jimmy even did headlines and guest Chevy Chase came out with a Conan wig (although Chevy wasn't into the bit, that wig didn't last long before Chevy diteched it).

Wow, to have Chevy Chase of all people join in the bit is REALLY kicking Leno when he's down!

I don't know how "down" Leno is. He could retire tonight and live off his stand-up and corporate earnings. (In fact, he does that anyway. He puts away his NBC salary in the bank or somewhere.)

Letterman was rough on Leno last night. Basically, he said Leno is behind the mess and said Conan is the latest victim of Leno's ambitions.

I believe it. Do you really think Jay didn't see the ratings of his show tanking? He made that remark that he would happily go back to 11:30! Does anyone not think he has a direct phone to the powers that be at NBC and whined that he wanted to do a late night show?

According to Late Shift by Bill Carter, Jay signed a secretive contract to take over for Johnny. So that was a done deal from the get go when Johnny announced his retirement. Dave never had a chance of getting the Tonight Show. No matter how much Johnny personally campaigned for Dave to be his successor. NBC knew they had a bonafide contract for Jay to take over. Even Jay knew he had the job before everyone.

Fast forward to today, do not think Jay gave up all of his powers when he was forced out of Tonight. I believe he is sly and squirmy, slithers like a snake to get what he wants. I could go on. But that is what I believe. Of course Jay was behind all of this. He (or his 'people')may have also leaked this to TMZ to begin with.

Jimmy Kimmel has done the Leno wig bit a few times before. Truly the funniest late night show of them all. Love Cousin Sal! And Lettermen is back to old form, that's for sure.
