I got the same impression concerning the relationship between Dave and Bill Wendell.

I believe that was the fly-fishing trip from when he sent the boys on a tour of America. M&S are from Bangladesh (although I remember Dave once joking about them being from Davenport, Iowa!)

Manny was on the CBS show during one of the show's trips to the West Coast (either LA or San Fran-I tend to think the latter)

Interesting - just today I was watching Dave's last appearance with Johnny on the Tonight Show. Dave told a great story concerning Bob the dog eating two lbs. of rotten ground beef and Dave had to give the dog hydrogen peroxide.

Gerard Mulligan retired as a writer eariler this year, I believe. Dave had him in the interview chair in a half-serious, half-comical chat. They also did a brief video tribute to him.

He still has made a handful of appearances since then coming out of the doors by the spiral staircase as whatever celebrity or public figure is currently in the headlines.

Speaking of bug eyed, remember Dave doing that close up to the camera with that wide eyed expression saying " I's been hypmotized! " Funny.

Ahhhhh... If that is the case, I would be willing to bet that NBC assigned BW to Dave's show, and Dave had little or no choice in the matter. Now that he has considerable clout, Dave can bring in whoever he wants.

Also, as I understood it at the time, Merrill Markoe (sp?) was Dave's one-time girlfriend, as well as a writer on the NBC show, and that their relationship ended badly, for whatever reason...

That's very possible. I went to NYC last year, stayed at a hotel just a few blocks from the Ed Sullivan Theater and noticed that most of the tenants are gone. Rupert's "Hello Deli" is still there, of course. It's amazingly small. But most of the other stores are empty.

We got into the show that week and had a lot of fun. That is one smokin' band!

He'd come out during the Mailbag (I just realized they don't do that anymore) or Week in Review as someone in the news that week wearing some crazy outfit (a Sylvester & Tweety T-shirt for pres Bush or a dress(!) for Janet Reno) screaming a hilarious line like "W in the house!" (pres. Bush) or "I'm outta the big house you losers!" (Martha Stewart) and afterwards would throw things back to Dave usually calling him a name like D-Train or Zippy. Very funny man.
