David Murphy is retiring from 6ABC on September 7

Bummer as a viewer but good for him. Time to enjoy a new chapter.

And does anyone feel like they’ve been testing more people just to see how they perform in the evening slot? More people who don’t typically fill in for Gardner taking a few days of his vacation coverage.

Yeah, agreed. Tamala Edwards filled in on the 6p and 11p for the first time ever last week, apparently. They're definitely testing successors (not replacements) for Jim Gardner.

I believe Sarah’s recent stint was her first in that sub role, and while I think Matt may have done it before, he was another recent unusual fill in. I think that now covers all weekday anchors having been there at some point.

It also puts them in with the other evening regulars (vacations notwithstanding), so they get a sense of other chemistry possibilities for “domino” scenarios.

More immediately, this raises the question of mornings. Add a second meteorologist to maintain the current approach? I’m an advocate for bumping Chris Sowers into the Karen role and Karen to David’s. But they seem to have a bizarre reluctance to give airtime to Sowers that I just don’t understand. Brittany immediately jumps in to weekday evening fill in, but Sowers can’t even be allowed to do a full weather report from the shore on the 4 pm? He gets passed over for weekend evenings after doing the job for months? Something smells rotten there.

Yeah, I don't understand why Chris is rarely seen filling in. Krystal Klei from 10 appears very often on the weekdays, and 3 occasionally has Matt Peterson outside of weekend AM's (although the latter to a lesser degree, since they have a freelance meteorologist in Tammie Souza).

Personally, I think Brittany would have been a better fit for weekend mornings. That would have also allowed Chris to get the promotion to evenings.

It makes no sense whatsoever. He was in the station during the tornado outbreak and they relegated him to the web stream. No promotion when it was clearly warranted. As soon as Brittany came aboard, even the Friday noon fill-ins went away.

There may be an obvious explanation, but that's not someplace I want to go.

I have two theories as to what the reason is, but I won't be posting them on here because one of them involves politics. Still, both of the reasons shouldn't mean he doesn't get a chance to fill in.

I like him and his forecasts, so I hope we'll get to see him more on weekday mornings after David departs, even if it's just temporary.

It’s not his topical knowledge. You have one more theory than I do perhaps. But so it goes. The days of paying dues and moving up accordingly seem to be gone.

I do realize it’s not like there are no other examples broadly speaking. Jamie Apody is on her third sports director and remains not having been promoted. The 4 pm show wasnt a chance for the morning team to move up as Rick and Monica did (and Cecily for that matter). It took them several openings to finally give Sarah the nod for an afternoon slot after being skipped over for newcomers. This seems to be another in that trend.

So it occurs to me that now WPVI is down to having a regular open only at 5, 6 and 10. 11 has long been short naming only Jim Gardner. But they never cut a new open for the 4 pm after Sarah was made the co anchor.

Weekends only have normal opens for mornings. Nothing updated after Brittany was added. They’re going to need to have a slew of new ones made.

They're now using an "Action News at 12:30, continues" rejoin, which I don't think was ever used before (except maybe on Sundays around 2013 when Walter Perez succeeded Rob Jennings). It's Charlie Van Dyke, so it's probably not recent (there are two other announcers that do promos and closing sponsor tags; he only does opens now).

I know it’s nitpicking to the highest degree, I really hate the short opens. Just run the full music even without the list of names. Or for crying out loud, use versions with the talent who is still there and add whoever is added later on.

I don't really mind it, but I don't see the purpose of it. Even if they don't want to list any names, they can still run the "Action News, Delaware Valley's leading news program" voiceover with the normal-length intro.

I wonder if they will start using the short open on ALL newscasts, at least temporarily; they'll probably find someone to replace Charlie Van Dyke, since his recent recordings have not sounded good. None of the other stations do it, either (although listing the talent seems like one of those things channel 6 will never get rid of).

Tons of other voice talent out there. Find someone new and move on. Funny part is there’s no reason for a short 4 pm open. You have all the other talent. You have Brian and Sarah at noon. Do some flipping editing and you’re set.

The bigger question is filling the morning slot. Outside hire? Wouldn’t surprise me at all.

I’m not sure I see a connection there. Whether one wants it or not is one thing (and of course I have no idea if he and his wife might find it more advantageous for him to work weekends). But..um…could you see a business telling a woman she couldn’t get a promotion because of a baby and get away with that? They can’t do it to a man either.

Whatever bizarre issue the news director over there may have, parental status darn sure shouldn’t be part of it.

Cecily Tynan just teased a "special announcement" to air during tomorrow's morning show, and it is related to the weather department. Curious to see what it is.

Karen named lead meteorologist for mornings? Brittany goes to mornings? They already tried her out with Karen. Or some new gizmo. Super duper something-or-other radar with a 6 in its name.
