SNOW - David R, longtime radio personality
7/11/2005
David R Snow, a longtime Buffalo radio personality, died Thursday in Mercy Hospital after a brief illness. He was 75.
Born Wallace J. Wasik in Buffalo, he attended Seneca Vocational High School in the 1940s. After his sister was diagnosed with rheumatic fever, he was forced to leave school and get a job to help with the family finances. He received his GED later in life.
Mr. Wasik worked as a cabinetmaker and radio personality throughout his life, occasionally going back and forth between careers or working part time at both.
Best known as disc jockey David R Snow at WWOL Radio from 1965 to about 1985, Mr. Wasik left the station for a short time after a dispute with a station manager in 1971. He was hired at WXRL but returned to WWOL shortly after leaving.
Named "Most Popular DJ of 1973" by Eastern States Country Music, he stayed at WWOL until the station changed its format to rock 'n' roll in the mid-1980s. Mr. Wasik returned to carpentry and in 1990 started working part time for country radio station WYRK. He left the station in 1995 but continued working as a carpenter until recently.
He was a member of the Orchard Park Chamber of Commerce from 1997 until 2005, and he was a lay reader at St. Simon's Episcopal Church from 1970 to 1975.
He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Carol A. Trala; three sons, Wallace Jr. of Amherst and
Michael and David, both of Buffalo; a stepson, Shawn Scott of Buffalo; three daughters, Kathleen Besaw of Gouverneur, Mikki Roeser of Virginia Beach, Va., and Tina of Buffalo; a stepdaughter, Melissa Nason of Orchard Park; a sister, Marcella Szczodrowski of Buffalo; three brothers, Lawrence of Florida, Thomas of Buffalo and Robert of Pennsylvania; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today in F.E. Brown Sons Funeral Home, 6575 E. Quaker St., Orchard Park.
